About to go get my new ride...
« on: June 05, 2010, 07:28:50 am »
Just leaving to go pick up a rust & dent free 84 diesel bunny. CS 1.6 engine (didnt we agree these are 12mm engines?) and it has a 4A 4spd trans with a very tall 4th gear (3.94 fd & .71 5th). anyway, im trading a dead 1980 gas rabbit. in just as good of shape. but still, the beige 84 is still a way better car. i went up and looked at it at the peoples house, and they said it didnt run, but grabbed a chunk of wire and jumped the plugs and it fired right up.. idles nice, only needs the cold start advance for a few seconds, and it takes maybe 1 complete rotation to fire it up. oil cap does NOT dance when you set it on the valve cover either.. has a fairly recent rebuilt fuel pump on it, but not sure on injectors..

anyway, im pretty sure i got one hell of a deal here. there are parts on this car that i have never seen on a rabbit before. like the little lip under the bumper that kinda fills in the gap in the bumper.. and a couple other little things..

anyway, ill post up a few pics to drool over here in a few hours.. when i get it home, its getting header-ized and a decent exhaust system, followed by the pump cranked up and governor modded..

Not sure if it's 12mm or not, I don't think CS is normal for a rabbit.

My '84 red gasser rabbit has that little bumper lip, and you'll probably notice the bumper is closer to the body too. The bumper mounts don't have the spring mounts anymore either.....front or rear.

So no turbo yet?

Sounds like a really good score ;D
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

my best nights of sleep start with dreams like this ...
Great score for the diesel dogs of the world !

I'm not familiar with CS code
No big deal when you aren't spending the big money on the buy-in anyway.
Look for 16D (11mm) or 1.6D (12mm) on backside (firewall side) of block.

Hope it went well and you got it without any "sellers remorse".

I've heard that rumor too, but the CS block that came out of my old Vanagon didn't have squirters.

its a CS van engine, a later one i think.. and it has every bit of its 52 hp. most powerful un touched n/a rabbit ive ever driven. has no problem going 65-70 up hills. the trans is making noise :( and i was really happy it had such a sweet 4 speed.. nice .70 4th gear, but 2 pints low on oil..

no, theres no turbo on it YET. but i did throw together a 20 minute bigger, better intake. and im going to be putting on a header in the next few days. i have a brand new header, and all the stuff to put it on with. why not right? anyone got any reason as to why i should use something else besides the header? im aware that its eventually going to crack off, but im gonna build a block brace to help out as much as it can. and i cant stand how quiet it is. its so quiet i cant even tell if its running or not at highway speed. haha.

i traded my red 1980 rabbit C gasser for it. car didnt even run. they thought this diesel didnt run either. but it runs good enough that it will start COLD with a 3/4 DEAD battery, barely enough juice to light up the LEDs on the dash. rrrRRRrrrr.. then it rattled to life. i about shat myself.. i know how picky diesels are about their batteries being charged..

other good news, it has recently (last 5k miles) had a inj pump (650 bucks) timing belt, struts, strut bearings, brakes, and a bunch of other stuff (came with a pretty good book of receipts to the total of about 2500 bucks worth of parts and work) this car was such a good deal even my dad was a bit excited about it, and he does not like VWs very much. oh yea, i believe no one broke 100 mph with a stock n/a diesel on the other thread? this rabbit will go 100mph. not quickly, but it will.

Update - it has the shifter cover under the car. this really is a very complete car.

Super Cool ! !

I thought they might back out on the deal after it started up and idled.

It must still have the underhood sound deadening blanket intact as well, to be nice and quiet like that. Those things are a real charm.

Congrats on that sweet deal  8)

I want proof of this ;) with that trans and assuming stock tire setup, you were spinning 3860 rpm. Was this before or after intake mod? Gov mod? I do not believe a stock 1.6 will do 100mph, not for a second do i believe it.

I don't know about stock but the old flat red bunny it was an 84 would do lots more than the 85 the speedo would show. It would still pull at 85 if you gave it the last little bit. It had the intake hacked and a 2.5 or 2.25 exhaust and the gov mod. 4 speed too.

ok, well short of taking my word for it, thats all that its gonna be. it goes 100 mph. no joke. i about shat myself when i looked down and the speedo was about wrapped.. this car RIPS for a n/a car. most powerful n/a ive ever driven.. but now it has a header and a bigger air intake..

remember guys, this thing has a 4A... were talking .71 4th and 3.94's.. thats a good combo for speed. and the engine has less than 100k miles on it. wont even puff the oil cap when its sitting loose on the valve cover. why wouldnt it do 100? i can drop it into 3rd on the highway and pass cars no problem. it will go up hills however fast you want in 3rd gear. this car is NOT GUTLESS like most n/a cars ive driven.

I could understand Gov Mod, Intake, and Exhaust... But a stocker? Nope. no way in hell will a stock governor fuel to 3800 in a 0.71 gear, I mean downhill for 6 miles maybe.. but not under normal conditions.

The pump has been messed with surely. Stock fueling at 3800 rpm would be %20

cool nonetheless however, didnt you bash me about a month ago claiming my N/a was quick? lol sayin it was nt possible and all that... lmao :)
