Where To Get Injectors Tested/Adjusted in GTA?
« on: January 04, 2008, 06:48:36 am »
Does anyone have the name of a good, reliable
shop, in the GTA, to test/adjust my TD injectors?
And what's the usual charge per injector?

I have lapped the sealing surfaces with
  400, 600, 800 and, finally, 1500 grit sandpaper,
on a piece of plate glass.

However, in a conscientious effort to obtain a
perfectly smooth, flat surface, I may have been
  a trifle over-zealous  .

I read, somewhere, that the lapping process can
significantly increase the breaking pressure. So,
  testing/adjusting is highly recommended.

Is there a diesel shop, in the Greater Toronto Area,
frequented by members of this forum, equipped to
accurately set the breaking pressure?  And how much
do they usually charge? (I have eight injectors to do).

Any names, information would be greatly appreciated.

  Thank you.

Talking to Giles, he says they should be lapped with some far finer than 1500 grit.

  Really?

Just how far, beyond 1500 grit, does
  he recommend?

Most of the posts I've read, on lapping
injectors, didn't seem to take the
  process much beyond 600 grit.

I thought I was being over cautious.

I guess I'd better start looking for
  2000/2500 grit wet/dry sanpaper.

  Thanks for the information.

I'm hoping others chime in here... I've always gone up to 600 in the past and never had a problem. but a set I just built for someone else evidently is leaking... might be a fluke, or my torque wrench is wonky... or perhaps 600 *is* too coarse and I've just been lucky so far....

Anyone else care to share their injector lapping standards ???

I read your very well-written and informative post
on the subject of lapping injectors, for which I thank
you, and none of those, who followed your procedure
seem to have encountered any problems with 600 grit.

I'm hoping that Giles's standards are counsel for
perfection and that somewhat lower standards can
prove to be quite adequate and satisfactory.

Perhaps others will share their expertise/experiences.

  In the interim....thanks again.

Thanks for your kind words !!

I believe the gold standard here, according to Dr. Bosch,  is a microtome... a precision shaver that is able to take very fine cuts at very straight angles and leave the surface mirror-smooth.

Not having one in the average shop we improvise... but perhaps we sometimes go too far sometimes.  I know we're doing stuff to the IP that makes Bosch-trained guys shudder !!

As long as it works, I guess, and up to my last set 600 grit seemed to work

I've used Giles' lapping tablet. Now I believe any sort of paper that has a 'grit' rating, no matter how high, is simply way to coarse to do a proper job.
I repair, maintain and modify VW's and BMW's.
Good work done at affordable rates. Welding and fabricating, too.

so you tested them with Gilles then? How much did you end up paying for each injector?
