Replaced the Oil Pan and found one bolt that was almost stripped and now won't seal right - oil leaking.
Question, will extra silicone help or is there a better fix (JB Weld or something)?
I dont have experience with any, but try one of those thread fixers.
Remove the pan and give it a good cleaning.. especially at the point of the stripped bolt. Worth a shot!
tap the hole to fit a slightly larger sized bolt
Helicoil is the way to go. everything else is a bandaid. striped threads are common on alluminum parts on motorcycles and helicoils work good, last a long time.
Sometimes you can get away with using a longer bolt to access the remaining good threads further into the stripped hole. Not the perfect fix but it works in some cases where thread repair is almost not an option .
The pan bolts are 6X1mm I believe. You can sometimes slip a 1/4X20 tap in and get enough bite to do the job. Best of all though go buy a Recoil kit at Carquest or Princess auto to fit a proper 6X1 mm bolt to the hole. They are made in Australia and are cheaper than US made Helicoil. These kits are cheap and you will use it again sometime in the future. Besides it is a pain in the ass changing wrenches and remembering which hole has the odd sized bolt
