I'm considering installing a Mazda intercooler into my 1980 Audi 5000.  It looks like it will fit in the space in front of the AC condensor (which is in front of the main radiator).  However the inlet and outlet of the mazda intercooler is 1 5/8 inch ID.  Thsi is the same as the inner diameter of the turbocharger.    Will this slow the flow of air too much, even if I use 2" tubing berween the IC turbo and intake manifold?

If it's from a 626/mx6 turbo I can tell you from experience that it's a pretty effective intercooler. However, I've managed to split the end tank from running more than 20psi of boost regularly. This is on my 626 of course :). With my current engine setup, I've been running about 11psi and have never seen post intercooler intake temps go past 120F even on a long 3rd gear pull with 90F ambient temps. Of course the turbo's decently sized and is barely working at 11psi, but it's still impressive.
