broke compressor mount ear
« on: October 12, 2014, 08:33:35 am »

Well my trusty eco diesel just threw me a good one. After replacing my trans mount i was so happy hot dogging along and my ac belt started squealing. Took a look and the ear of my ac compressor and its broke off. i thought i finally had a good grip on keeping that mouse trap of acessossories and belts working but Dang this really took the wind out of my sails.

I while back i tried to follow along with what it takes to convert this to a serpentine belts but it just got to confusing using ac and power steering. Besides me welding another ear on this compressor there has to be a better way.

Please any input what so ever would be great.

Does the ac work? I've probably got another compressor laying around. If not and you could delete it change the belt setup. I've done a deep swap but its been a while. I think I used a tensioner mount off of an aba I cut down and vr6 water pump pulley. I'll have to go back and see what I did.

Tig weld the ear, or replace the compressor... That's about all you can do!

thanks, dug into this today. I remember a while back replacing that bolt because it was snapped off seems that some one had it rigged before . I did replace it with a different bolt not a vw one and thought i had it squared away but it fudged it all up this time.  The dealer says he has a bolt in stock. Im going to pick it up. And see how it fits . something just dosent seem right.

so, my big question of the day is  after looking at this should that bolt go all the way through the backside and have a nut to secure it on the front side or should the bracket be threaded to accept the bolt.

thanks again in advance

alright i may have solved the mystery........

the bracket and someones makeshift bushing.

A while back there was a snapped of through bolt in this location and , i did not give it to much thought and put another incorrect through bolt in it.

while taking it apart i found this awesome part which i believe is supposed to be a threaded bushing

my cool bolt that was in there for the last year which was a rig on top of a rig.

so just to verify if i have this right after looking at the drawings at the dealer. I ordered two threaded bolts same size.  the blue side gets a threaded bushing and bolt and i believe that the red side should have been threaded to accept my other bolt but has been drilled out buy the through bolt genius prior to me. I think the red side should be threaded and not drill all the way through.

can anyone verify this or correct me. Thanks again

I'll go look tomorrow when its daylight.

Wouldn't the easiest thing to do just be to get another compressor? I don't think there's a difference between them on the 8v gas and diesel motors, so go get an mk2 compressor from the junkyard. You would have to deal with the refrigerant and recharging it though.

I dont mind welding or charging/ re charging the system i just want to bolt it up correct with the correct hardware so it does not happen again.

this is the best generic drawing im working with.
Its the lower picture.

reference 33/26 i have covered colored in green......how does the front of the compressor mount in blue. I believe it was threaded in the bracket but cant confirm. I will probably put a threaded insert in there but im trying to verify how it is supposed to go

thanks again.

I have all the MK2 AC stuff I took off my 92 ECOdiesel in boxes exactly how it came off the car.

Every nut, bolt, and bracket...

Problem is, I won't be able to get you a picture of how it all goes until later tonight, possibly tomorrow morning.

By welding? You could have re-clocked it to get a new ear. The only change is the orientation of the clutch connector.

thought of that but had some thoughts about oiling issues.  Got her mounted back up still. had to order a new alt belt. should be back in action tomorrow.
