I was thinking change the filter and get it running and then go add some gasoline to the mix. hah

Yes 4 yrs. It has not shown an issue at all until now ;). I had a replacement, but I used it on the woman's 88 when we revived it back in October.

sadly I have heard that song or lack of song before. My kids think it is funny as we have several thrift stores in our area.

You two are just too damn old to appreciate the music in the world today ;).

Now before you judge me, know that I love Bieber, Cyrus and One Direction.

And now take me seriously, 70's Rock till the day I die :D From time to time a catchy tune pops up and I DIG THE HELL OUT OF IT LOL.

Yes, you are on old fart. If your kids are older than me, you is olddd looool :)

I have read a good idea. Adding a 12v relay'd pad heater to my fuel filter for just such cases of gelling and to help warm the fuel for the first bit of a cold start.

I've got the 120A alternator, so my electrical system can handle it. That and one of these circulating heaters will definitely be on my upgrade list ;)

I'm not sure I'd want to load the battery with a 12v heater (other than the glow plugs).

Typically, the filter should flow fuel easily enough in very cold weather, plus an inline pump there should be no issues unless the fuel is unreasonably thick from adding heavier oils. A larger bore filter setup (or two filters in parallel) would be a way to minimise fuel restriction without loading the battery more.

An engine heater is nice... the cabin gets warm fast and the start is easy.

Are you against loading the battery more for any particular reason? If this were a GLS TDI it would have had the glow plugs, glow plugs in the coolant line, heated seats, rear defroster on and charging the battery back up on a cold start with the same 120A alternator.

I am not too worried about frying the alt, and I have a 9 year warranty on my battery.

An engine heater seems like a way better route than a block heater. For it to be perfect, it should be able to provide like 7v to the cabin fan to run it on low while it is circulating coolant... it would keep the cabin warm and possibly even all the windows ice build-up free.

Only concern is the battery load before/during starting... after starting and the alternator is up, no worries.

Gotcha. Yes I kinda figured you probably only meant pre-start. Well Yeah, the 12v heater would only be for no start gelling issues.

My owners manual says that is ok to add up to 25% gasoline to diesel
if the fuel is gelling. That said maybe you could pump a couple of gallons
of gas into your tank. I don't know how you are going to mix it though.

Gotta be careful there, that manual was for Diesel 20+ years ago.. The new LSD and even newer ULSD cannot have a 25% gasoline or kerosene mixture as they could have before.

Old diesel had lots of lube, new diesel.. not so much. It will run, but for how long till your pump goes boom..?\

The tank is nearly full to the brim lol.. which is why I saw it fit to add the oil. I had a full tank of diesel with more than enough diesel additive.

Hi
I thought since you were running almost straight motor oil,
lubrication would not be an issue.
