That looks like an AAZ turbo, if it's 028 145 708 R it should be from a 96-97 1.9 TD not TDI.
damb... wife may be a keeper.. she buys you suprise turbo.. be it that it is wrong.. she still tried too... thumbs up for that... its clocked wrong for a mk3 tdi... but same token someone may have screwed with that...
that looks like ALOT of side play.. looks like a substantial amount of clearance between the compressor, and the housing..

I'm sorry I meant 701 R not 708 R, my mistake. That turbo fits 96 and 97 1.9 TD engines. They weren't sold in the US, most likely it came off a Canadian car. It's ok if there's a little side to side play in the shaft but it shouldn't move in and out. if it does that it's in need of rebuilding.

Passats and 93-98 Jetta/Golfs. All you will need for this to work on your MK2 is a custom oil drain, an adapter plate for the downpipe (or a mk3 K03 AAZ downpipe) a smaller charge hose to intake manifold and a smaller hose from the airbox to the turbo.
