No Horn
« on: May 19, 2011, 09:11:12 am »
I've read lots of posts on horns.  Mine is not working.  The relay stopped clicking last night when I was trouble shooting.  The fuse had blown so I put a new one in and now the relay doesn't click.

Does the actual horns in the engine bay (96 golf) get power all the time, and the relay strickly grounds them to work, or does the relay suppy power? Should there be power at the horn all the time or only when the relay is on?

Is the horn button a ground system where it grounds the relay or can you check for power at the horn button as well?

Thanks

IF I remember, the switch in the steering wheel grounds the relay which then sends power to the horns. If you can't hear the relay, your problem is from the relay back to the steering wheel. Most likely the relay, contact slip ring or the horn switch

My horn ground was bad when I got it, fixed that and everything was good.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

I looked in my bently manual and all that was wrong was the relay #53 (usually horn relay) was in the wrong location.  Moved to the correct one, now horns work beautifully!

I guess that's why the relay wasn't clicking !
