I just did the heater core in my 95 Golf and I'd rather change one in a MKII any day.

oh wow, great.. thanks for that piece of info, next on my plate is a heater core replacement on a 95 Jetta..  :'(

on a side note, i found out that non-a/c cars do NOT have the same heater fan as an a/c car.. they have the same heater box and core, but the fan is DIFFERENT. the motor is mounted vertically, instead of horizontally. and it has a foam guard on the bottom of it that is great at holding water. the rust ring around my old fan motor was half way up the actual motor. not a chance it still works.

i like my car because its different (bare bones CIS, manual everything, no options) but i also hate how hard it is to find certain parts for it. it had some sort of dinky little radiator in it when i got it, and appearently it leaked when under pressure, so i swapped that out for an a/c rad, it was about 6 INCHES WIDER!!

ive only seen a handful of mk2s that are as bare bones as my 86 golf.. the first time i popped the hood, i about shat, you could see light all around the engine. SOO MUCH room under the hood. not having an a/c pump really makes things simple.

??? sorry but you must have done it some kind of long way. On a mk2 diesel NA and no a/c can be done in an hour and a half, 2hours max for any one. Mk3 's are much worse, the whole dash and knee bar have to come out. Mk 1's don't take too long if you cut the end of the box out, but are a pain as you have to stick your head under there for the whole time. late 70 big fords were the best- remove the front right wheel, cut out a hole in the wheel well !

caveman,

by far the easiest heater core to change is a 68 Fargo pick up.

it wasnt super time consuming. i just had to do everything.. core, hoses, blend doors, heater motor.. and there was the time spent pulling parts off cars out back.. so the actual heater core replacement wasnt THAT bad.

Sawsall time!   And looking at that dash gave me a great idea for sound deadening that I really need to do.  Foam, spray on type.  Anyone agree?

I mentioned it for the hilarity factor,

it's the way the factory designed it

i know you dont get lucky on a mk2 or mk3, you gotta pull the dash. you cant get to the heater core any other way, unless you cut a hole in the rain tran, and firewall possibly.. lol.

I did a heater core on one of my father's cars (if memory serves me correctly - a 79 Olds 98) that involved taking the two heater hoses off the core at the firewall, removing one screw and a cover plate, and then pulling out the heater core.   Took all of about 10 minutes start to finish.   Best design ever for heater core.

72 Chev pickup heater cores were external of the cab. i believe all you had to do was pull the fan housing off, and there it was.. they were one of the easier ones to replace too..

I just did my mk2 heater core w/o air and it was waaay simpler than I thought it would be. I did not have to remove the dash.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

how on earth did you get the heater box out from under the dash without pulling the dash? i dont see how it can be done without atleast loosening the dash..
