I am going to want to change the gearing on my gas to diesel idi passat project, as it turns out that I am going to have to use the passat's transmission. Does any body know if transmission gears and or ring&pinion sets are available aftermarket for vw's??
Thanks.
I believe VW motorsport has some. Also if it is 020 brian at brokevw has many gear sets and will sell them.

I believe it's a EZG. The motor is mounted longitudinally so it's not your typical transmission. I wonder though if any parts are interchangeable as the final drive ratio is - 3.70, on ours it's something like - 3.67. But we have a fifth gear ratio of 0.75 where as the passat has - 0.84. Not sure what the difference will be rpm wise with the idi installed, therein lies the dilemma.
Thanks.
3.70 is a lower r/p than most other vw diesels ever got. Only a few got the 3.67 trans.. Most got the 3.89. So the 3.70 is all good in the hood.
Even the .84 fifth might be alright.. That gear on a normal size tire will net you 2800 rpms at 100 km/h. Still not too bad.
paid 105.00 each for two new 3.67 R & P
Ebay
I have never seen a source of new transmission internals, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I have bought "hard" parts (gears, shafts, etc.) from Gary Zink. He often posts ads on The Samba. He was very good to deal with and good prices. He owns a transmission shop in Washington state and specializes in VW transaxles.
