Resonator recomendations

I'm thinking about welding up a new exhaust system for my 1.6 na caddy. After doing a little research, I'm thinking of going with 2" diameter aluminized system with a dynomax superturbo muffler and a resonator, but am wondering what people are using for resonators. Any suggestions as far as brand/model would be much appreciated. Thanks.

call techtonics tuning, see what brand they use in their exhaust systems.. there fair priced too IIRC..

joining this thread to see what people say... I also want to put a new exhaust on my 1.6NA. I was thinking of going with 2.25". I currently have a stock resonator from a VR6 I was going to use... but I was considering running a 2nd resonator as I have herd a larger exhaust on the NA's is pretty loud...

well think of it, these engines are SOO LOUD because they have about the most compression out of any engine ive ever seen factory..
24:1 compression does not make a quiet explosion..
anyone remember how loud 6.9 and 7.3 n/a's were?!

The stock exhaust doesn't seem that loud; Though there is certainly a good deal of noise coming from the front of the car
I guess I don't want put a new exhaust on and have an un-godly drone when I'm cruising at 70mph (there is enough noise coming from other sources in a Mk2) Just hoping for another small boost in economy and power to complement a Giles pump

they are not loud with a factory exhaust because:
its choked up, and doesnt flow well, i dont think the pipe is even a full 1.5" diameter..
the muffler is huge, and is a multi pass style, adds a fair amount of back pressure..
and theres usually a resonator directly below the shifter..
take and cut your muffler and resonator off tho, then it will be LOUD. like louder than any fart can equipped ricer on the planet..
there is such thing as having a big exhaust and still having it be quiet tho..
2.5" with resonators, and a magnaflow muffler, or 2 even.

I talked to TT, and they sell the resonators that they use in their systems. They are a perforated style with some kind of glass pack, made for them in a variety of pipe diameters, and sell for $40 or $80 for stainless. Seems like a good solution to me.
Yeah, it seems like most of the racket is coming from the engine and the stock exhaust is nice and quiet, but once I have an exhaust put together, I'll update with a noise report.

I installed Jones Full Boar, purchased from Summit Racing... less than $20. I got one of the longer ones at 17" overall with a 12" case length. The diameter is 3.5". The tech told me that it's reversible, if I wanted to quiet it down a bit, but it would reduce the flow. I oriented it for maximum flow, and the car is very quiet. I'm running a 20+ y/o TT 2" system with a Dynomax Ultraflo. This is on a'82 Rabbit.
It's a louvered glasspack. FYI, if it has packing, it's a glasspack and considered to be a muffler..... resonators are hollow.

you can tell what they are just by tapping them with a chunk of metal, a screwdriver, something like that..
if it goes THUD, its a glasspack..
if it goes TINK its a resonator..

just to clarify (as I've never run a glasspack) The packing material will eventually burn/erode away from use? The exhaust will get louder over time as this happens

they burn away on gassers, they clog up on diesels..
it will get soo soot packed that it wont hardly work no more..
i had a glass pack on my 84, and it got progressively louder the whole time i ran it..

So is there a way to get around this clogging issue, or does one just have to replace diesel mufflers every so often? Do all mufflers have a packing that will clog?

nope, chambered mufflers(like most cars use stock) have no packing, and can flow very well.
I am partial to "turbo" mufflers, they are cheap, sound good, and dont choke up the exhaust too much.

cheap turbo mufflers are junk.. ive never really liked them. ive never really ran a quality one, so cant say much about those.
and on a diesel, if you cant see thru it, its going to take some power away..
i put a 2.5" flowie 40 series on my black car.. and even as free as those mufflers are, i still lost a few psi boost..

Just to update, finally got my exhaust done. I stuck with the mk2 toilet bowl, had a 2.25" downpipe made, and I did use the resonator I got for free (pretty sure it was from a VR6) the good news it really woke the car up (1.6 NA) and is not that much louder at all... which Is what I was looking for... trying to avoid drone on the highway. Seem to be getting no smoke with my foot to the floor anymore... which means I can probably turn up my pump a little more now...
on the downside though, I noticed a few tiny flecks of oil in my overflow tank

seems like I may need a headgasket soon... but that's another thread...
