stop solenoid

Been running for a little while now with my Giles "superpump" rebuild on my 1.6 NA... everything has been going well but my car just developed the habit of not wanting to shut off... I tried pulling power to the stop solenoid and it just keeps idling. Sometimes it will stop just fine and sometimes not, so it seems that the solenoid is bad/sticky. This is already my second one too, the first solenoid on the rebuild was leaky (from the center screw terminal) and Giles replaced it for me. Are these things known to go bad that quickly?  Should I just pull it out and clean it or go with another new one? Any recommendations for a not so expensive replacement?

It's a simple metal cylinder with a spring. It shouldn't fail. You can easily take it out and test it with some wire and the car battery. Maybe your ignition switch is the problem.

But if I pull power to the solenoid manually, shouldn't the plunger close and the engine stop? I will remove the solenoid and see if the plunger is working appropriately.

Not sure if it's very related but I have that same problem at around -45 F, as the temps get colder out it starts shutting down slower and slower. At around -30 F it takes just a slight bit longer than usual and then at -45 or -50 it takes 10-20 seconds and sometimes I get tired of waiting and let the clutch out.

replaced the stop solenoid with a new one ($10 cheap-o from prothe) and engine stops normally now, so I guess the solenoid was to blame, though I can't really see anything wrong with it. I guess I'll clean it up and keep it around just in case...
