Hi,
basicly, like NOTORIOUS VR Said, almost any 4zyl. Tranny will fit. You donīt have to switch to hydro. clutch. you can convert the 5 cylinder Tranny to mech. clutch.
But you have to witch the shiftbox to a cable box. (e.g out of an G60).
Price:
Tranny 100€
Clutch 150€
Small parts 250€

hmmm yes a hydro tranny would be very nice! a very smooth ride. I guess all I would need is the master cylinder for it since the slave cylinder is right on the tranny?
btw a 6 speed trans would be nice, if the first 5 gears could be the same as what I'm using now, and maybe 6th gear could be set to cruise at 120km/h @ 2k rpm or so. but dream on
i put the 3.67:1 ring and pinion in, and an .71 fifth gear. 2450 rpm at 100km/h.
were to get these?in europe
at that rpm what should i be seeing for fuel millage im only gettng about 550 to a tank right now running 3000rpm on the hi-way.
1991 Jetta TD (AWY tranny? too dark to go check)
in 5th gear:
2500 rpm = 92 km/h
3000 rpm = 110 km/h
3500 rpm = 130 km/h and yes it is happy to stay there as long as I have ever been able to keep it there.
Car has 385,000 km, average economy over last 120,000km is 5.8 l/100km. A bit better in summer than winter. Thats a 110 km round trip commute with an average speed of 85 km/h...anywhere from stop and go to 130 + km/h. I beat on it pretty hard at least a couple times a day, a gentle driver could probably wring a bit more out of it.
and if anyone cares:
In 3rd, it stops pulling at 4000 rpm at 90 km/h
in 4th at 3750 rpm at 120 km/h
in 5th, I have never pushed past 140, but it is still accelerating. I once saw a PDF of a VW chart showing a Vmax of 155km/h.
i figure that i get about 33 mpg is that good and thats 3200rpm on the hi-way

i've had mine buried past the 160km/h on the speedo... i estimate 170km/h. that is FF gearbox with 1.6L TD motor from a 1990 Jetta. it still had more

i wouldn't say so. i get 42MPG and i usually travel at about that RPM.
I would really love a six speed tranny, with maybe some lower gear ratios for the lower gears, and 6th gear could give the car the ability to go 180km/h at around 3500 rpm or so. Gotta love how the fuel consumption on a diesel is more relative to rpm than a gas car.
Tranny options: (rpm@speed for 195-50-15 rubber)
European 02M TDI 6spd: 2.61FD with .805 6th = ~1950 rpm at 100kph.
A3/B4 TDI 02A tranny: 3.16FD with .76 5th = ~2200 rpm @ 100kph
A4 TDI 02J tranny: 3.39FD with 0.76 5th = ~2400 rpm @ 100kph
5th gear options for 02A/02J: 0.71, 0.68, 0.65
LinkVWMS R&P for 16V 020: 3.32FD with .71 5th = ~2200 rpm @ 100kph
LinkTallest 02J/02A: 3.16FD with 0.65 5th: 1900rpm@100kph (but big jump between 4th and 5th)
Notes:
020 is rod-shift/cable clutch and pretty weak.
02A/02J are cable shift/hydro clutch, but can be run as cable clutch
02M are cable shift/hydro clutch.
02M is the dual R&P 5&6spd tranny.
HTH.

I have a question...
My Eco diesel Golf, with stock fuel pump had 160 max speed...Then, I changed the pump to real TD, and he still goes 160...
Now, I have tachometer, and, by 160 km/h, I have 4000 rpm...Shouldn't it go up to 4500 rpm or more?
I also feel huge loss of power when i hit 4100 rpm in any gear, it's like the car hit the wall, so I'am wondering is this normal, is the problem in fuel pump, tranny or my tachometer is wrong?
Time for the Govoner mod.
