i have taken my flywheel to 3 machine shops and none of them can do vw flywheels. they say the center hole is too large for them to deal with.
i have a brand new sachs clutch kit and id like to re surface this flywheel, maybe even get it balanced but no one seems to be able to do it.

i just got off the tele with a nice guy at a local machine shop that said he would be happy to re surface the flywheel for me. and for an additional $35 he will machine off the big flywheel weight thats past the ring gear.
think its worth it?

Yes get rid of that big weight! $35USD I would say is a very reasonable price to knock it off and it will really wake up the rev characteristics of your motor.
Here at Passenger we remove the weight ring and flip the flywheel around and sping the surface down to the bolt head surfaces. They only weigh 6lbs when done!

My buddy next door did mine on a standard 14" swing lathe. Your shops don't know what they're doing.
One thing to remember, whoever does this for you has to take the same amount off the mounting surface as they take off the wearing surface!!
(made that mistake once!)

For just the surfacing you are looking at $45-50CAD, Like patrick said you need to take the same amount off the mounting surface as the wearing surface. As far as taking the weight ring off probably $30-40CAD. Really, sending your flywheel here may not be worth it as far as shipping and stuff is concerned, flywheels are heavy, although they aren't when they leave the shop  I have been thinking about offering surfaced and lightened flywheels on an exchange basis. WOuld anybody be interested in this? The flywheels would be 6lbs. What would you be willing guys be willing to pay for a surfaced and lightened flywheel? A core would be needed of course.

a flywheel exchange would be a neat idea. just be sure to let everyone know that their used flywheels MUST be in a reconditional state. i would hate to send out my good flywheel and get back one with chewed up teeth or one thats all flaked out with rust or something.
so youre asking 45-50 cad for surfacing, and 30-40 cad for lightening.
how about we split it down the middle then. 47.5 + 35 = 82 cad.
so i send you my flywheel plus 82 cad. also let me know what the return shipping costs on a 6lb flywheel plus a couple pounds of foam and a cardboard box. ill include that on top of the 82 cad.
deal?

Hmmm looks like an exchange program would be worth while. We have made 3 of these 6lb flywheels so far and none have been balanced, and they all see 6 grand regularily. Would you guys be wanting performance clutches as well?

I put an add up in the vendors section. The 210 mm costs the same.
