Power steering pump
« on: May 19, 2010, 12:11:39 pm »
Hey All, i think my power steering pump is fried..as the level is good..but i get a horrible squeal (more than belt squeal) and no power assistance....

first off, is a bad power steering pump the general consensus....and second are the power steering pumps frpm the gas cars interchangeable with the diesel cars?

Thanks

Paul

If the belt has good tension on it, but system not working - yeh probably the pump is cause.

If this is an mk2, those pumps will swap from gasser.
Mk1 will swap between gas and diesel.
And mk1-mk2 might swap with each other.

Any other models - i'm not familiar with

Open the power steering fluid reservoir with the car running and see if the fluid is circulating.

I'm pretty sure that the bentley has some specs for checking the pressures on the power steering pump.

Depending if you have AC or not all MK3 8V motors are interchangable,

when I'm not sure if it's one specific thing, I try these two steps just to double check (they're free so I always start here);

- if you dump water on a belt and it squeals it should be replaced, that's a free way to double check the belt.
- you can remove the belt and run the motor, that will just tell you if the component(s) driven by that belt is the only noise you're hearing or if there are multiple noises.

in your particular case I'd bet pump needs rebuilt/replaced being fluid remains but assist isn't there.

I have a brand new Mk III pump in its box sitting by my desk... My car has a Mk II motor in it but I THOUGHT it had the Mk III pump.  :P  PM me if you need one...
