so we just put a new cable in.
was letting off alittle high, so we adjusted it.
didn't realize we were turning the wrong way.
went to drive off and i had nothing, so i reversed back into the drive way.
adjusted the cable correctly. took it around the block....
perfect. but, now the reverse lights won't go off.
any ideas?

Is it possible to disassemble it? I know the four pin ones can come apart and get fixed.

The contacts under those little nubs that get pushed in when the tranny link engages them, get the most wear on the one that works reverse light.
Your old one was hung together on the contacts there.
BOTH of my 85 ACH tranny's multi-prong switches are just like the one you have now (as far as not working the lights). The reverse nub has a different feel to it when you take it out and work it by hand, as opposed to all the other nubs that seem perfect in operation.
You probably need to just go with the 5 pin. You can still get them new. OEM is about $90. I found aftermarket as low as $20'ish.
But I'm too cheap to buy yet. Going to pull 2-3 at junkyard tomorrow first, and check them out for a replacement in the Jetta.
In the Truck, i just wired a dash toggle that illuminates ($5) when its on, for the reverse lights. Thought it might come in handy to have the lights on-call when loading/unloading at night or hooking/unhooking a trailer. It's a man thang, probably not what you want in your Rabbit.
G/L on fix soon

Had such a switch on my first VW van on purpose... great for those guys who crowd your butt at traffic lights 'cause they think you've accidentally selected "Reverse" instead of "Drive" and are about to back into 'em when the light turns green.
Also had a switch on the brakelights... great for tailgaters on the freeway.
OK, sorry OP... back on topic.... ;-)

i'd like to get some KC highlighters facing backwards on a roof rack to EXPLODE into HIGH BEAMS on the ol' tailgaters.

blinding lights + thick black smoke = ultimate tailgater eliminator.

Make a warranty claim, and try again.
Spray as much lithium lube into the actuator nub sockets as will go in there before next launch.
if all else fails, there's always the toggle switch in one of the lower dash bezel blanks, as an option ... ....

Maybe relaying the reverse lights will save the switches.
