Yes, it will. But the serpentine pulley/harmonic balancer can also wobble if it's improperly assembled, lots of them come from the factory wobbling... Check the V-belt pulley, if it also wobbles chances are the crank pulley has come loose.

Looking under the car at the crank pulley while running it looks to be wobbling.The tensioner also appears to be wobbling, ordered new ones,along with timing belt .Hope this will cure smoke problem!Thanks

you might have to modify the crank to take the newer style flat topped pulley.  I think that is the cure for the crank pulley keyway problem in those engines.

If it's already wobbling, I bet you've worn out the keyway in the crankshaft.  Be prepared to deal with an unpleasant surprise.

Hopefully it hasn't got too far yet.

are you saying the alternator belt pulley on the crank wobbles?  That is pretty normal.  Never been able to get mine to run straight.  I think someone bent it.  Or are you saying the smaller geared pulley that the timing belt runs on wobbles?  If that wobbles, you might have a keyway problem.  The keyed crank pulley was designed badly and the keyway becomes expanded causing the key to move.  When this happens the pulley will wobble.  This causes the timing to be wrong and usually some valves will be bent.  So worst case scenario is you need to pull the crank to get it machined to fit the new style flat topped pulley and you need to pull the head to replace a couple of bent valves.  Thank VW for their stupid keyed pulley design

well only one thing to do then.  Take the alternator belt pulley off the crank and have a look at the key in the crank pulley.  If it turns out that you have the keyway problem then you should not drive the car until you get it fixed as what usually happens is you get increasingly more and more movement in the key until you get piston valve collisions and the engine is destroyed.

Local tractor shop replaced crank pulley and welded keyway, reground to fit new pulley .NO MORE SMOKE ! Only 37 MPH maybe timing not right on?

Could be.  But Passat's never get the same mileage as a Golf of Jetta anyway.

What were you getting before?

Only second tank of fuel since bought car ,but reading other posts saying 900 plus some say 1150. Was hoping for better

You mean 37mpg?  That sounds about right for what I've heard for Passat's.  If it really is 37mph, then I'd suspect something badly out of proper timing that is causing the lack of power.  The PO of my truck reported it had no power after having the engine rebuilt -- turns out the cam was one tooth off on the timing belt.  A clogged fuel filter will also severely limit top end power, though it may still idle fine.

Can the crank be moded while its in the vehicle or does the crank need to be removed?
