• does it matter which way the TB tensioner is turned for belt tensioning?
  
  do I pull it up, or push it down?

• I turn mine clockwise, or up, if you will.  It will give more of a wrap on the cam sprocket and also make tightening the nut easier.  If you go down it will tend to want to slacken on you as you tighten the nut.

• All vw tensions go clockwise , until the MK 4 2.0 and maybe the 1.8 gassers. They will have and arrow if they go counterclockwise. otherwise always "up"
