I want my own 2.1AAZ.
« on: December 05, 2009, 10:14:18 am »
I want to build my rabbit as my fun car.  And track it.  Since its already a diesel, i figured why not stay with it.
Hopefully in the next week i'm picking up a rebuilt (knurled pistons tho, ew) 1.6td and a junk (sheared crank keyway) 1.9.
The 1.9 is missing most of the accessories and the turbo/inj pump, but it still has the manifolds.
Don't know what it looks like inside, but the price is good.  I'd most likely giles-ize the pump and toss in the 1.6, get the exhaust and intercooler routing all sorted, then build up the 1.9/2.1 slowly.

Anyhow.  I read the thread that was linked a while back about the 2.1L aaz and decided to see if i could find those pistons.  Well, thanks to ebay, i did.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120347361616&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT  It seems like these are 1mm oversize, so 84mm bore i suppose.

Apparently that price is for 4!  And if the picture is to be believed, they include rings.  I have no idea who the manufacturer is.  Maybe someone recognizes the logo on the box?
I have been highly unsuccessful in finding out the height and wrist pin size (to see what rod i'd need) - anyone have any ideas where i could look for this info?

How cool would a diesel track rabbit be??  I'm sure its been done loads of times before, but i'd just love to kick some ass with a td rabbit.

It looked to me like that ebay link was for one piston.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

how thin would that make the cylinder walls?

the general consensus is that a 1.6 block does not have enough meat in the cylinder walls to bore it out and use 1.9 pistons, I just wonder if the AAZ has enough to use the bigger pistons.

this also brings up the question, how much wall thickness is needed?

well hopefully soon i'll have a 1.9 to look at, and if that is indeed the price for 4 pistons, i'll order a set and see what happens.  150 bucks shipped for a set of pistons is dirt cheap, i might as well check it out.  for everyone else's benefit at least.

I read the same thread and from what i can remember the photos showed very little left between cylinders and i think they were standard size pistons if that is the case those pistons would take 2mm from what little that engine had between cylinders think i would be taking another look at that thread? and check the liner thickness  plus they have 10 sets available there not going to sell them in a hurry as those engines are just about obsolete over here {£50 each for a complete engine }

here's the picture again.

still looks like there's going to be a fair bit of meat between cylinders, but pictures can be deceiving.  i have my 1.9 block now, so i'll do some measurements and post up the results.

the issue is not the amount of deck left between the cylinders, but the actual thickness of the cylinder walls.

I agree that would be my concern ,any idea what the diameter of the stock aaz bores
