Thats how my old 80 rabbit died. Started knocking, drove it for another week, engine ran away at a stop light, BBLLAAAAMMMMO!
Big hole in the oil pan and 4 plus qts of oil running down the street.
Pulled the plates and the VIN tags (and the beer from the trunk). Parked it on the side of the road where it died. Mind you that was many years ago. Wish I knew then what I know now. I would still have a sweet ride.

The story as I heard it was my brother was just puttering along down the street delivering pizza when he heard a knocking, then saw some smoke. He pulled over, it made a loud noise and then it just died.
I think it had around 425xxx kms on it but I could be wrong.

as the vultures begin circling the carcass...
all i can say is wow! that is some serious damage!! scary that there weren't really any early warning signs other than needing to pull over and then whamo. i thought damage like that was from driving hard...
so the problem was oil starvation?

My guess is it spun a bearing, the rod welded itself to the crank (or piston) and was then forced out the front and back of the block.
This isn't my engine (yet) so no parting out at this time. I do hope to buy it and take it apart for further assesment

My guess is a wasted intermediate shaft bearing. I bought a 1985 Jetta TD with an engine that the PO grenaded. Upon further inspection, it had the dreaded flaking int shaft bearing.

i've been following a company that was supposedly coming out with an electric oil pump. all information about it is now gone off the site

so i guess they scrapped the idea...
http://www.emp-corp.com/ however they do sell electric cooling pumps that flow very high volume!! a benefit of running an electric cooling pump is that you can keep it off for the first few minutes of running during very cold starts. this will keep the swirl chamber temps up so that the car doesn't smoke so bad at idle until warmed up, and gradually increase flow as the engine heats up.
