Hard to see in the day but visable in the headlights. Its got the hole in the cap and a tube by a previous owner.

Your may already have one but..
When you take the cap off can you see the cam?
If yes get a new VC gasket and an oil baffle that goes under it.
Will help with the oil vapor.

my 86 golf that had about the same mileage had soo much blowby that when i took the oil cap off it wouldnt sit on the valve cover. it would kinda float like a beach ball on a fan. and when i routed the hose from the valve cover to the intake manifold from the manifold to the air box the air box would fill up. and im sure it dripped oil into the engine.

I think some air blowing out is normal, but a lot of smoke isn't. Mine blows a bit of air out and no smoke.

If your really worried about it you could always do a compression test but it dosent sound bad

Check your oil mileage if it is not so good then a ring job might be in your future. If there is blowby your compression will be low leading to hard starting in cooler weather. Cheers Dan

Right. Being as you are in Virginia, you don't have many cold days, so if your rings are shot, you will not have too hard a time starting in the cold. (one trick if you have a really cold day, park on a really steep hill and roll start it - the fast spinning will more than make up for the cold and lower compression)
It will be a mater of diminishing returns - the more worn your rings, the more oil and fuel you will use. At first it will be cheaper to just drive it. As they get worst (years ??) you will get to the point its cheaper to do the ring job (if you have the skills / tools).

I'm very new to the world of VW diesels. I just got mine about 1 month ago. It is a 91' jetta non-turbo diesel w/ 111,000 miles. I have been burning a little oil and noticed some smoke coming out when I take off my oil cap. What exactly does this mean?
