Author Topic: AAZ driveable to junkyard without turbo? (Read 12556 times)

My aged Passat has finally bit the dust. In the space of a week it had a small electrical fire in the dash, the head gasket stopped sipping coolant and started blowing it out the expansion tank and when I jacked up the front to take off the head to replace the gasket one of the shock towers ripped in half. Oh, and the block has a crack in it to boot.

Time to part it out. But in BC the government will give me a grand or so to spend on a new car/bicycle/bus passes as long as I can drive it to the government scrapyard.

I'd really hate to send a good K14, Passenger Performance downpipe, manifold, and head to never never land, so I'm wondering if it'll make it 10 miles without all that stuff

it will sound horribly loud without an exhaust manifold. don't use the heat vents either or you'll probably pass out too :lol: at least you'll have some cool EGT's :lol:

how far do you have to go?

From Burnaby down to Richmond, about 20 minutes. It'll probably sound a lot longer though :shock:

should work just fine. are you taking it there with the Giles pump on it? try not to push the car too hard :wink:

I'd rather see the pump go into good hands. I'll see what comes out of the "feeler" thread I posted. I might even consider trading it to a local for another pump and some cash just so I can drive it away.

Well you won't make it there without the head.... other then that though you shouldn't have a problem...unless it catches on fire again

Nope. It's a "clean air" initiative, the idea is to take older polluting vehicles off the road, so they have to have to be licensed and insured for the last year and driveable to the depot. Pulling parts at the yard is verboten, but if it can get there under it's own steam, it's fine no matter what it's missing.

Might be worth chucking on a NA manifold so as to direct the exhaust flames towards the road instead of the bulkhead. Last time I tried this on a petrol Renault of mine, I was suprised at the length of the pretty blue flames that spat out of the ports for a good foot, at idle. Wouldn't like to try that under power, at least not without good fire insurance. Make sure to take a camera! :twisted:

Spend a little cash and have it towed to around the corner, then drive it in from there.

Or, drive it around the corner, pull the turbo etc, then drive a block without a manifold?

Twere me I might also find another pump to swap in first... that suckers gotta be worth at least $500 all on its own?

I guess it all depends on how much time you want to spend...

I've got to get SWMBO a rolling set of wheels by Saturday and I can't buy a new car and apply the enviro-rebate unless I scrap the car before purchase.

If anyone wants to swap a tired plain Jane 1.9 pump for the Giles one and some cash this week I'd look at that too. If it's someone local they could drop by and I'd have a swap done in an hour or so.

I doub if they would even give you a ticket if you told them what you were doing, evidently it's their idea anyway to get rid of them

I think you can use just about any old pump can't you even a 1.5 I think just to drive it, I wouldn't want to loose your pump either, probably worth more than the turbo and harder to replace.
