Any D24T guys here??

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering how many if any people on here have a D24 or D24T. Not too many diesel guys over on the volvo forums. I have had a few 1.6 diesels and am now looking at a D24T... Just wondering how many others are out there. Hopefully we can share some info/tips and whatnot. I plan to have some fun with this thing! 6 cylinders should be even more fun than four!

you lucky sob.I ran into a guy at work that had a volvo and he said there wasnt any 6cyl. tds in the us.He lied!I want one now

Oh by the way theres a none vw diesel page where this should be posted.

What, non-VW? It's a VW engine, the 2.4 TD..!
They used it on the VW LT van, and sold engines to Volvo who put it in 240, 740/760 and 940 cars.
vwjunkie53, you can read topics about the 1.6 td engine - that'll help you since it's the exact same engine with 4 cylinders. That's right - same rods, pistons etc. work on the TD24 too. There's a couple of those around here with over 300 hp - should be fun I imagine!

The whole reason I posted here is that the volvo forums dont have much support for the diesel engine, since its a VW diesel! I have rebuilt 1.6 diesel engines, and the turbo diesel in the '85 jetta that I had and shouldn't have sold! I work at the vw shop here in st.louis. I know the engines are very much alike and share most parts. I'm hoping to get some insight from some D24 guys that are making some good power and getting some tips or tricks that might be D24 specific... I figured this is the forum to be on, I haven't come across another that has so much info and discussion on the vw IDI diesels!

Well damn not too many D24 guys I guess. Anyone that has one that would be willing to share any performance tips, post back or shoot me a pm! I have some questions about a retorque of the head...

It could be helpful to go through all the 1.6 TD and 1.9 TD topics - they're all talking about the same things that apply to your engine as well.

I have been reading through many posts... I have learned a few new things that I plan to try out.
The head torque though, I'm wondering if it would be different with the D24 since the head is so much longer... I would like to replace the head bolts but I'm not sure how to go about it. Obviously I would replace one at a time, but should I torque it in stages untill i get to the full value, or just the first stage and then replace another... Then after all of them are replaced start going around in the pattern and bringing them up to full torque.

sorry :oops: forgot.I know ive never seen one in person in the states.A turbo model anyway.I know the pump lda has the same ingredients.

If it has the stretch bolts like our 1.6L then I don't know. I wouldn't recommend taking out the old bolts without doing a headgasket. I think you could be in trial and error mode. *If* I were to do this I would do the full value 1 at a time as to not lose as much clamping pressure, but it sounds like you could warp the head that way. The other way of loosening them all a little and replacing one at a time would probably lead to HG fail quicker than the other. Good Luck.
If there isn't a problem I would leave it alone.
P.S. I like the 53 in your name...this number is getting more popular.

Yeah, definetely replace the head gasket if you open the head bolts.
About torquing the head, the same applies as on the 4-cyl versions.

I'm a D24 guy. This board has a lot of good info on the VW IDI engines. There aren't many D24/T cars left running in the USA.
Mine is 25 years old this year. The great guru of D24/T engines is Tom Bryant, of Maine USA. There is a D24/T mailing list - there aren't enough of us for a forum or bulletin board!

I currently drive a '94 Volvo 940 with D24TDIC, I like it a lot. My first diesel powered Volvo. I have driven propane/lpg powered Volvo as wel as ethanol/E85 but I must say I like the TDIC a lot. It's very comfortable to drive, it does have some lag which is a pitty. Torque peaks at 2500 rpm but it's not very fast (it's slow) below 3000-3500 rpm.

There are, btw, some quite scary tuned TD Volvos where I live.
Thinking it's not too difficult to take 45 hp per cylinder...
And all that torque!
Me, well, I like small, agile cars that are fast on straight roads but sick fast on the twisty bits - so my Jetta will do nicely thank you!

Hey some replies!
Reason I was thinking about a retorque, is that its common practice on cummins 5.9 diesels. I have heard of many guys doing it after the engines have some miles on them, especially if they are modding it. Its not leaking, but I was thinking before I go and turn up the power, having fresh bolts all evenly torqued would be helpfull. Its got 190k miles on it now. I believe they are the stretch bolts, the part number is the same if my memory is correct. I guess I'll just leave it rather than be forced into changing the gasket when I don't have time if it would pop. Retorque on a cummins engine seldom causes a head gasket leak, but then again, those heads are cast iron!
