Whats the difference between the all the diesel cams? NA vs TD they're the same, yes?

Also, how do you tell the difference between a hydro cam and a mechanical lifter cam?

N/A and TD cams are the same,

you can tell difference between solid and hydro, by the solid having 1 more cam cap, thus 1 more journal on the cam, also if you have both in front of you, you can deffenitly tell a difference in lobe size. hope this helps

Both solid and hydraulic diesel heads have 5 cam caps.  Only hydraulic gasser heads are missing # 4.  :)

I'd say "Only mexican-made hydraulic gasser heads are missing #4".

Not to pound on this but only to be accurate, in case SEARCH leads someone here... tis true.  My 1992 last-of-the-German-Jettas gasser Jetta has no #4... really gave me pause the first time I had the lid off "oh no... I have a damaged casting."

Well, as far as I've seen, all hydraulic GTI's I've seen had the 5 of them. Only one of them had 4, and it was a german block and a mexican head (odd mix, I know).  :?

Maybe it's just the dx,pb and pg engines that have 5.

that sounds more accurate.  I've seen PF, RV, MZ, etc and they all had 4 caps.
