I recently bought a 94 jetta gl and the governor does not seem to function at all...it will not add fuel under load it will just stall.

also it feels very underpowered..very laggy until approx 2600-2700 rpm, it feels like there is no boost until this point.

i also noticed there is no audible turbo whine at any engine speed..i am used to the instant boost sound of a tdi..is this normal?

I havent touched anything on the car yet..has 375 km on it..unknown history..averaging approx 35 mpg mostly highway driving.

any help would me much appreciated

your TDI has a VNT turbo that makes boost all the time. Look up VNT turbo on wikipdia.

I didnt think the 94 had a VNT?

94 was a AAZ motor either K14 or K03 turbo need to take the intake boot off and see if the turbo shaft spins in your fingers! note to self! engine not running while doing this check please !

the afc line was cracked so i replaced it and threw in a new fuel filter..made a big difference. thanks

although this fixes the low power situation, what do you know of the work done to this motor? does the crank wobble at all??? do you know if it has been 'fixed'

unknown history... i meant to check for the wobble today but forgot to..if i do find it what should my next step be?

definitely plan on a timing belt/tensioner/water pump in the very near future.

compression test is also in order before i get too in depth..im sure a set of injectors wouldnt hurt also

engine runs great otherwise no smoke, no noises, very smooth, starts instantly all the time.

one thing i did notice though.. it seems that the initial pedal travel does nothing to increase rpm...the throttle is moving on the pump but it takes a bit of travel before it revs up

removed switch on IP and removed EGR stuff today as well as powering up the advance solenoid with the shut off solenoid... noticed the throttle shaft seal was leaking pretty good..also on the list to fix

i have a k14 turbo i think (has adjustment right on wastegate)..noticed some oil residue in intake but oil consumption does not seem to be an issue thus far..ill keep an eye on it a rebuild might be in order

also where do you guys get the hose used for the afc line? i just used a piece of fuel line to get me by..no one seemed to have small enough line..is it a dealer item?

still have the problem with the initial throttle travel

normal rubber vacuum line (3-4mm) works just fine.

the accelerator pedal response is a result of the significantly "detuned" injector pump state - mine was just the same when i picked it up - old owner said it was "diffiucult to drive" - not after you wind in the fuel screw!

i found that winding in the fuel screw until the idle starts to come up just a little (50-100rpm) then backing off just a tad will make it far more driveable with the pedal (and much faster ;-)

throttle shaft seal leak got bad fast and was pouring out on friday night..pulled the pump and sent it out for an exchange unit..it was game over needed about $400 in parts alone.

put in the new pump and it runs even better now and mileage is definitely improved

also did timing belt and tensioner... looks like i got lucky as someone has already put a tdi crank in it.

checked all the glow plugs while the pump was off and they appear new which is a bonus

are k14 turbos difficult to rebuild?

ok mileage is up to 38mpg..not much of an improvement..i suppose injectors are the next place to go..and also a turbo rebuild

no one knows anything about k14 turbo rebuilding i guess?

you might learn new words... by making them up while trying to get the turbo apart :lol: j/k! but seriously, for removing the bolts, rust check makes a product available at cdn tire for removal of seriously rusted bolts. i've tried it, and it got out some REALLY stuck brake slider pins!!
