New to Diesel... 94 IDI

hey, how are you?

I just picked up a 94 golf diesel and it would start overheating oddly, and the heat would stop working and the lower rad hose would get cold, so i just assumed it was the water pump not pumping, so i changed it up with a brand new unit, fired it right up, worked wonderfully at idle, however if you drive 1 km or so all the coolant is blown out right away, as in you dont even have time to get up to operating temps.

So i pulled the head off, assuming it was the headgasket. I've found this white powder on 2 of the valves (what im pretty sure are the intake valves), one has it really bad one only slightly, other two are perfect and the exhaust valves also have nothing. I cant find any obvious cracks except 2-3 small ones on the bridge between the valves, but i figure that might be normal since I had seen it at work when I worked at the local VW shop.

I can't find any noticeable problem with the headgasket, however i did find that this car mustve had the headgasket done before as there are clear indents where valves have smashed my pistons in the past.

so my question is, what do you think? Would I notice a crack like that quite easily? could it just be the inner layer of the headgasket?

help :(

Are any of the cylinders oddly clean?

Check the FAQ for jim's post on his AAZ overheating. He ended up modding his thermostat

its not overheating, it pushes the coolant out before it even gets warm..

I will take pictures tomorrow.
