Head gasket needs replacement
« on: September 25, 2008, 05:06:04 pm »
My headgasket is in need of replacement but when I went to get one I found out its complicated. How do I know what gasket I need without first removing the old one? Car is 1992 Jetta 1.6L TD.

Right behind the injection pump there is part of the headgasket that sticks out from between the block and head. It will have either notches in the edge or holes in it. 1,2 or 3. That is what headgasket you need. If it's a 3 hole, it might be incorrect as it is the thickest and lazy people just throw the thickest on to be safe.

When you buy the headgasket it's a great idea to also buy the official Bentley service manual.... it will pay for itself on this one job alone and save you making potentially expensive mistakes.

You'll also need to read up on timing the engine accurately...a dial indicator and adapter will be required.  The service manual has the full procedure.

Thanks for the input. I have a 1 hole head gasket and the car actually came with a Bently manual in the trunk. Someone suggested getting the newer 1.9 metal gasket, good idea?

Kinda jackin this thread. I was reading my bentley before about piston protusion. If I spell wrong just guess what I mean Im tired. I want to measure this when we pull apart a motor in the future but I don't understand how exactly to measure it. The dial indicator seems angled and stuff in the pictures, does it have to be or what? Also I dont have the specific tools can I just use a dial indicator on a jig?

Like can I take a super flat piece of steel and measure how thick it is then put it on a cylinder. Then take a dial indicator on one of those magnetic bases and press it down to till it says the thickness of the metal. They just slide the metal out and measure the piston? If that makes sense.

Well I have my head gasket in and my timing kit, and injector nozzles are on the way. I'll be very busy on the weekend.

But I have noticed a lot of air bubbles in my fuel lines when I rev the motor. No fuel leaks. But lots of air. One member here said that would be my rough idle problem. How can I track down my source? Removal of the water seperator was mentioned, how is that done?
