Building a 1.6 TD. Are stock rods good enough for high HP? (over 200)

when Dave built his franken motor at P.P. he was at 198HP and thinks he bent a rod! so i think it would be wise choice!
but there is others here with more knowledge that will chim in!

Yup, Cant beat billet h rods. But i dont see the 1.6 listed.
You will want rods if you are serious about 200+. especially with the amount of boost you will need to run.

what about cranks also?
I was hoping the 1.8 rods would work, since it's basically the same engine. I'll have to call on that one.

i would love to see you grab above 200 hp

especially in a 1.6 idi.....you will need to do something with the head gasket issue and the bending rods..... Did anyone on here find a fix for the high boost idi's that keep lifting the cylinder head clean off the block? o and that kind of hp don't count on daily drive ability...

I only expect to see those numbers with the boost in the 20's-30's
It will be a DD, which is why everythings getting overbuilt. boost wont go above a bar unless it's cruse night.

I'm thinking you're going to need more than 20s for boost pressure... seems that there are several guys on here in the 100hp range running 20+ PSI boost...

should go upto 30 no problem.
after that is when things start breaking and you have problems controlling the turbo....

^ What he said.
200hp out of a 1.6l engine is 125hp/liter, almost three times the stock power density (42.5hp/liter for a 68hp 1.6) and over two and a half times the power density of the 90hp TDI (47.368hp/liter) engines with their computerized controls and direct injection helping things along.
Just some tidbits...

1.9 head will be used.
CR will be lowered slightly.
again 200+ is a goal. maybe not this year or next, I will have a dyno sheet in my hands that says over 200hp...

Finding a turbo that will push a 4:1 PR with the low flow that is inherent to a 1.6 Liter engine is pretty much impossible. To get 50 PSI that will be somewhat reliable will take compound turbos, which is getting into some pretty tricky fab work, besides the head scratching trying to figure out which turbos are suitable.

if money is no object, or you have access to the right equipment, and are determined, i think you should have no problem achieving 200hp. just stick with what these guys are saying, and everyone here will give good advice to help you along.
that being said, go with a big ass VNT turbo  and check out dave 935racer's turbo setup for sale. you will need that if you wish to hit 200hp. well maybe not need but it will sure help!

They are about as good as you'll do with a single turbo, but are not designed to push more than 28 PSI. pairing it (a vnt 20 lets say) up with a gt20 could be a good way of getting decent spool and 50 PSI, but keeping the head on would be a trick for sure.
