G60/Eaton M45 on a 1Y
« on: September 02, 2008, 03:03:22 pm »
anyone know if its possible?
Ive been reading around and by sounds of it it would suit a diesel more as more torque would be availible, gotta love that torqure  ,

What would be needed, im unfiamiliar with the g 60 engines,
I think i need : - supercharger, mounts and i assume you could make the pipework up?
Anything else?????

Whats everyones opinion then?

Edit::   actually how bout a Eaton M45?? too much maufacturing in mounting brackets and piping mounts???

Like BlackTieTD and others have said, a supercharger will rob power from your engine, power that is wasted out the exhaust. A turbo will give you as much boost but gets its energy from that otherwise wasted kinetic energy. Virtually every one of the winning diesel race / drag drivers now are using turbos, not superchargers for this very reason.

Sure you can use a supercharger, but why waste the energy out the tail pipe?

Here is a nice write up about such things http://www.rotaryeng.net/sum-turbo-comp.html

It includes information on the 2,027 HP turbo-compound 2 stroke DIESEL aircraft engine - Napier Nomad.

I know I could just do a AAZ swap, and instantly have a turbo, I am just wondering what everyones opinion is on a supercharged diesel, yes it robs power but, it gains more than it loses, and boost is instant so it makes a better haulage engine, as it is more torque lower down, im not really trying for more hp im trying for more torque.

Also at the min an eaton m45 sounds like a more affordable job, compared to a g 60 as they are more redily availible although less efficient.    how much manufacturing is in  getting a m45 to fit in???

I paid $299 for a NEW GT15 turbo on eBay. If the craigslist guy had not lied to be about the turbo manifold I bought from him, there would have been very little engineering.

If you don't already own the blower, I'd go directly to what works best for efficiency and power - the turbo.

With the blower, mounting alignment is critical, a turbo it is not. Both need good sealing. Where would you mount the blower so you had 100% parallel alignment in all 3 axis w/o coming out your hood ? If your engine is going into a VW, not much extra room. Mine is going in a much larger engine bay, but I still would not go to the extra trouble and constantly throw waste energy out the tail pipe. Diesel isn't getting much cheaper.

Do what you want as far as Turbo/Supercharger goes, but I'd shy away from the G60 because they are rather fragile. Additionally, blowers take RPM to make boost and Diesels don't do RPM's so you'd need to run a way undersized pulley/s.  I put the whole PG G60 motor assembly from a 91 corrado into my 86 Westy Syncro Weekender and got wonderful power...as long as the blower lasted. In the span of 12k miles I went through 1 rebuilt and 2 used blowers until I finally decided to convert to turbo. I really wanted the G60 to work but they run SO hot, the expense of 3 blowers plus the HORRIBLE fuel mileage I got was enough to push me over. I didn't have much for mods other than an RSR outlet, SNS chip+4.0fpr, ISV reroute and Larger intercooler and every one of these mods is better for longevity but that didn't happen. Granted this is on a gasser motor but I just started driving my new turbo PG motor and I am putting down so much torque that I am slipping the new clutch that I had installed a few thou before losing my last blower. This is the same setup that I was running with the G60 and never had a slipping problem, but now running a BMW 524td turbocharger (Garret TB0324) I can't even accelerate even moderately agressive without spinning the clutch. Now I'm thinking that is some power!

I think as far as superchargers go, a Paxton would be easier to set up.
