Bought two Garrett GT2056V turbo's Pictures added

I found what I believe to be a very good deal on a Garrett GT2056V.
Part number is 35242112G . Serial# is 757246-1. My research shows it is off of a Jeep Liberty 2.8 4-cyl CRD.
I am pretty sure I am going to buy it. Anyone here run one of these?
It will be going onto my looong term project engine. The 1.6/1.9 combo build. I have a new Super pump sitting on the shelf so fuel will not be a problem. I was told it looks super clean. I was also told there was some "small dots of green paint" on some of the bolts. Does that signify a rebuild? The owner knows nothing about turbo's and is selling this for a friend. Any opinions?

I looked at that link earlier. I could not find the compressor map for the vnt unit. The part number on that one was also different, I think that map is for a gas unit. The one I am looking at is 757246-1

That engine is made by VM Motori in Italy. At the time it was installed on the Liberty for sale here in US (they call it a Cherokee in the rest of the world so as to not insult anyone) the company was owned 100% by Detroit Diesel who was owned 100% by DaimlerChrysler. They had those paint spots on at the factory.

GM bought half of VM Motori and GAZ (Russia's second largest automaker) was to buy the other half from Roger Penske for less than $100m but failed about a month ago to come up with the cash. The owner of GAZ has gone from billions of $$$ 3 months ago to nearly broke today. Roger originally owned Detroit Diesel when he bought it from GM, but bought it back after Daimler paid Cerberus to take Chrysler….
GM needs the engines for their new Cadillac for the rest of the world. The company makes a full line of small diesels for automotive. In the rest of the world, you do not sell mid - high end cars unless they are offered with a diesel. Russians are just starting to realize what the European drivers have known for decades. DIESEL POWER is the only power ;-P
And I think it is twice as big as you need so it will never spool up to full power unless you change the exhaust turbine.

You may be right, but I am going to run a 1Y intake manifold, I have a new Giles Super Pump that was setup to work into the 30psi range. I have the AAZ head for the 1.6 block. I'm at 2nd overbore with new KS pistons that have been TBC and polymoly coated by swain tech. Got a girdle coming in the mail. If This deal works out with the 4350 connecting rods I will have a super strong lower end.
I guess I will just have to keep turning up the fuel and see how it goes!

It sounds great ! I'm sure it will work, but I don't think it will reach much more than 12 psi due to the large exhaust turbine. Should be fun, though...
Does the guy still have the rest of the engine ? I want to put one in my Rubicon but the bone yards around here think they are golden engines

I was in the exact same boat a few months ago when I found a GT2056V of a mercedes CL something-or-other. I pinged my concern to Named Tintin & this was his responce:
"You will be able to spool-up this turbo at very low RPM, much more than the surge limit, be carefull with the surge because the turbo will not last long.
This turbo is good for 30psi but not in rpm range above 2600rpm.
from 1800 to 2400 try to set the boost for a max of 12- 15 psi, and from 2400 and up you can gradually go to more boost, unfortunately with mechanical control I dont know how you can make this, with an ECU It's easy but It's not your case.
I never did ask him if he meant 30psi below 2600rpm not above.
I did end up grabbing the turbo cheeeeep but for now its gathering dust due to other projects.
I'm pretty sure with a good mechanical control & enough fueling it'll work.
As Tintin says tho, limiting the boost at low RPM is the hard part. I suppose a slightly large VNT unit for the displacement might introduce the slight lag (OMG flame me for talking about wanting lag with a VNT turbo) required to not jam 20+ psi @ 1800RPM down your engines throat. Hopefully Andrew sees this, I believe he's running a GT22 or maybe bigger on his Medcedes & can comment on tuning for boost / RPM.
It'd be great to see a few GT2056V builds as they are one of the only non integrated exhaust manifold VNT's that we can find in north america. My mercedes unit has a bit of a funny turbine inlet so making an adapter will be "fun" but not impossible The jeep units look easier to match to our mani's.

I'm running a 2056v form the jeep liberty on my 99.5 jetta TDI.I have a stage 1 ECU tune,.205 nozzles and FMIC.Boost is controlled to 18.5 psi same as the stock turbo.Full boost is at 2700-2800 rpm.Its a bit big but works well despite any serious ecu tuning or bigger nozzles.Spools up to 10 psi quick enough but takes a while to get to 18.5.

A 2056 is a 2056. Seems the compressor is the same with a VNT hotside. Compressor is still too large for the application. 1.9 is only going to flow 11.5 lb/min, that's if it is reved to 5000 rpm.

That sounds like exactly what I want. Do you thinik that's your ECU limiting low RPM boost or the limitations of the turbo to make boost at lower RPM due to its larger size?

As far as the ecu tuning, do you know anyone who is running this turbo with a more agressive tune? Are they getting more boost out of it?
Andrew, have you run into any surge issues on your setup yet? I'm sure you have tried a few full throttle runs by now.
ARB, sorry no engine. Just the turbo units. I did see a sprinter engine for sale though.........

I bypassed the n75 valve and put a steady supply of vaccum to the turbo accuator and the turbo was overboosting from 1700 rpm and up.Setup like this I managed 25psi @2200 rpm under WOT so the ecu is definitely operating the vanes from 1700 rpm and up depending on load.
I have no issues with surge,even when I spiked to 25 psi @ 2200 rpm there was no surge.The turbine housing is pretty big so I guess that keeps it from surging or Perhaps the bigger intercooler helps with surge issues? I don't know of anyone else using this turbo someone had to try it

Well,
Two turbo's came in the mail today. Good news and bad. They both look like low mileage units. No play whatsoever. One is in great shape, besides having pieces of foam packing peanuts inside both ends of the housing. Turbo #2 however is a different story. The person who shipped these put them both loose in a crappy cardboard box. The box was falling apart by the time I got it. The compressor housing on #2 was snapped right off, the compressor wheel is completly shot. All dinged and bent up from banging around. I will post pictures when the batteries recharge. Not real happy. I did not see a insurance sticker on the box. I have called one turbo shop to see about a replacement backing plate and compressor wheel. I was told that this is still a oem unit and Garrett has not released parts to the dealers yet. I am wondering if a different wheel will work. Anyone know if any ofther backing plates will work on this unit?
