oh yeah, just wanted to say that the wire that should go from the glow plug relay to the coolant temp sensor (which I don't have ::)) should be blue/white; as per the bentley.  saw the XXXX, but I don't think it changed for mk1's

Very timely, Vince.  I've just been dabbling with disconnecting my coolant temp sensor to see how it affects my GP performance.  Which leads to one comment on your writeup:  On your Step 3 in troubleshooting, you talk about disconnecting the sensor and then the relay should run for 20 sec.  You then say that if it does, the relay is good.  I assume you are also implying that the sensor is therefore bad?  Might be good to state it explicitly.

Also, would you want to include the collected wisdom about fast / slow glows and relays here?  Maybe the relay numbers and the GP numbers?  I know this has appeared in a number of posts over time, and since your How To's end up being frequently referred to, maybe this would be an appropriate place to capture the info.

Lastly, maybe some simple suggestions for those wanting to wire up a separate GP indicator dash light...

Thanks again for all your work!

Great suggestions... some of which I'd thought of, some of which... not so much!!

In particular, I'm planning to add a step detailing how to double-check the coolant sensor with a multimeter.

Will add your thoughts in... thanks again!

For the most part the MK1 setup is the same as an MK2, but if you notice any big differences holler and I'll update... I don't have an MK1 in the fleet at the moment. :'(

I am getting ready to fire up the car. There is the flange with the 2 pronged sensor for glowplugs I believe and I can't find a free wire to go to it. It is MKII 86 jetta. I just wonder if I hooked something else to it. All explination of the coolant flange sensors would be helpful.
PS I looked at vince's page he was making from this already. It said green wires go to it, but I can't find any  ???

I think I figured it out. I am using a different coolant flange and I had the old one marked I think with green tape. I have the one connector marked with green tape. I will just have to find where the old flange is.
Would that disable the heater fan from working? I am having some trouble with that. I replaced the resistor when I did everything else and it should at least have full power at the highest setting even if the new resistor was bad out of the box.
Need help as I won't put this together until I figure out the heater fan.
