Mid-80's Jeep Diesel
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:36:39 am »
We have a mid-eighties Jeep Wagoneer with a turbo diesel.   What I know of this engine: Engine family: 2.1 K6 JZT7.  It's from a Renault.  It's turbocharged and intercooled as well.  The turbo is from Air Research.

The pump is a VE4/9F2200R183.

Anybody have any interesting links on these engines?  Or maybe direct experience with them?

I remember reading in an offroader magazine a few years ago that this model of jeep has the record high mpg of any produced in NA.

She ain't purdy someone vandalized it last year pretty bad.  Too bad because it was restorable for sure previous to that incident.

Bummer. Did they damage the engine compartment also ?
I guess the reason it's a Renault engine is because of the connection between them and Chrysler back in the day , Remember those god awful rebodied Renault's  under the Eagle brand, i think. I don't quite remember as i have tried to block them out of my memory.

I saw plenty of those back in my wrecking yard days, I should have squirreled every piece away.... The engine is the Renault J8S.

I once sold a good running engine to a customer that was going to swap it into his Mail Jeep, never did find out how that went.

The 1984-1985 Winnebago Le Sharo and Itasca Phasar RVs had the same engine, they were built on Renault Traffic Chassis. You can find parts, complete motors, etc on many RV sites still. Seems they have quite a following, http://www.lesharo.com/

I see complete RVs for sale cheap allot for $~$2000 that "need work"
Like this http://valdosta.craigslist.org/rvs/1077289956.html

Back in the day when a Cherokee TD would come in with a bad motor  the mileage was always less than 100K and the head / gasket was blown, rod thrown,  turbo destroyed etc. Everyone always thought the Renault design was junk. I was never convinced  . In that era every passenger car diesel seemed to wind up in the yard that way, exploded with 50-80K on the odometer, with the exception of Rabbits. Initially I thought it was bad design.

Then I realized it was bad ownership. Most people that bought diesels back then didn't understand the difference between the gas brethren.  A diesel (esp in the 80's) needed looking after, care, regular oil changes, and proper operation. VW rabbit owners on balance got it, and I think that is what made the difference. Just to make my point, the TD Jeeps are like hens teeth around  the U.S., while there seem to still be plenty on the road in the U.K.

Big thread with lots of info here, http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/584104603/m/1521048841/p/1

Since the body is basically trashed, take a look around and see if you can find a Jeep Comanche Pickup that is good shape and swap the TD into it. It'll be a direct swap.

I think they also put those engines in Wranglers overseas.  That would have been a nice ride.  That I-6 that my Jeep had was a piece of junk.  Sure, it was durable but it didn't do anything else very well.
