Have trouble pulling their engine out? Mine has been a complete nightmare and its not even out yet, and Ive almost completely stripped the motor of parts. Any suggestions to help smooth this out?

It would be helpful to know what chassis, what engine, and what transmission you're wrestling with ?! :wink:

It's an 81 diesel jetta, and im trying to wrangle the current n/a engine out to drop in my TD 1.6.... and its a five speed if it helps.

Does the transmission have to come out as well or can the engine come out alone? Its so close as it is.

I'm pretty much useless when it comes to MK1's... However I know that many MK2 guys swear it's easier to remove the rad support and pull the motor and trans out the front as a unit.

Mk1's dont have that luxury.... Rad supports welded on....

And Im trying to stray from removing the trans as I dont have a 12 point bit to remove the cv's.

I've found that dropping the engine and trans out the bottom as a unit is about the easiest... THat is if you have the means to lift the car high enough, lower everything out, and slide it all outta there..

Second would be to remove the trans then lift the engine out...

If you have the means to support the trans you could probably unbolt the mounts and leave the axles attached.. This should allow you to move the trans outta the way enough to get it in and out

The little buggers are just not quite wide enough to separate the engine from the trans with the trans bolted in... Darn near imposible to get back together like that... Probably for the hasle involved you'd be further ahead to spring for the triple square bits... A set of 4 can be had for under $20 from most autoparts stores, and will come in handy if you ever need to do a head gasket...

I had to pull mine out also. I have a 91 Jetta Diesel. IT too was a pain in the but. I tore a cv boot trying to seperate the two.
Seems to always hang on the coupling off of the transmission.
After putting the prybar, hammer and torch down, I undid all the tranny bolts took out all the connections, and pulled both. The tranny stayed on even with out any bolts connected.

theyre seperating, just not coming completely apart. It seems theres just not quite enough room on the passenger side to pull the engine over.

You got it... If you tilt the front of the engine way up (trans too) it will eventually come out... I think I had to unbolt the rear trans mount to get everything tilted enough...
But once again it'll be darn near impossible to get back in and line the splines on the trans up to the clutch... THe imput shaft to the trans is probably what is holding you up right now... It's sticking in through the flywheel and such....

It's not too bad to pull the engine and trans as a unit , as long as you can get lots of travel to tip it up (trans down). Other than that, drop the tranny first and then the engine comes out fairly easy......

When I pull an engine I hook it up to the engine hoist so that it comes out on a 45 degree angle, motor up. I've gone out the bottom before, but prefer out the top.

Yeah, I think this is your biggest constraint... just about everyone seems to find it easiest to dispense with the transmission first *or* pull them both at the same time.

The tranny is much lighter than the engine, so probably easiest to be pulling the tranny away from the engine, rather than the other way round.

the 12 point driver can be found at places like autozone.

it comes in a kit of four. Labeled as xyz or triple square drivers
