that sucks! hope it isn't too painful to fix. My frankendiesel has been down more than it has been up in the 1.5 years i've owned it.

of all the cars i've owned i've never gotten through from one oil change (3000 miles) to the next without some catastrophy... except for my '89 geo metro with 200k miles, and my 1982 mercedes benz 300D 4cyl stick with 350k. Those were some rock solid rides :)

Thread jack!
Do tell about your Franken.  Whats your setup and what was the problem?

I had a NA block with new OE 1mm over pistons in it.
I had already removed one so I took some measurements and busted out the die grinder and made a relief for the oil squirter. It turned out really nice so I think I may actually pull the other 3 pistons and do the same thing. i would feel better with OE pistons in there combined with the Total Seal rings..

Anyway,  I'll post up some pics when I get them back from cleaning.

Dan, the broken ring land is very disturbing. Were these new pistons?

It's not possible that the ring compressor let the oil ring slip out a bit when you were installing these right?

I have to assume you were very careful installing pistons (not using excessive force) and mindful of the bottom of the ring compressor tool being flat on the block deck.

I agree about it being disturbing Myke.

All of the pistons went in with ease however anything is possable as I'm sure you know. The ring compressor I'm using is the same one I've been using for a long time, I've never had a problem in the past. That's not to say I wont or didnt.

All the rings looked great as far as being in place when I removed them, none were bent or broken, until I removed them anyway then I proceded to destroy them. I would think that if the oil ring had came out of the compressor that it would have been broken and it was not.

You can bet you little tush I'll be paying extra close attention when the new rings go in though.

Oh ya they were new pistons, once again Top Line product.

So any clue as to what the cause of low compression is? betting on stuck rings?

Do you suspect bent valves given the marks in the pistons?

Do you plan to drop new ring in and do an end gap measurement?

Is it safe to assume a failed turbo made it run away?

All the second rings were stuck in the grooves so I suspect that's the reason for the low compression, then the broken one of course.
Valves all look great, the marks on the pistons are so lite i didn't see them until I started cleaning them up.

Yes the new rings will have the end gaps checked for sure.

And there is no other reason for a run away in this case. the intercooler filled up with oil so it started drinking it.

So I have this thing completely tore down waiting for the rings..

When I ordered I was told "Expected ship date 08/22/08" I ordered them on 08/08 BTW.

Saturday I get a postcard saying they wont ship till 09/05 now

I'm at a junction point here. I can get an OE set from Myke but not till first of next week, that's not his fault just has to come from the dealer, by then I'm only another week to get the Total Seal rings (if they ship) which I would rather have.

It's costing me $27.00 pr day to get to work in my truck VS $13.00 in the car so I'm loosing $14.00 pr day.. I'm already out 11 days = $154.00. I'll be out another $154. if I wait for Total Seal so I will have spent well over $300.00 in extra gas money plus the $200+ for the rings..

I could have bought a damn short block already!!!!!!

I remember Hillfolk taking the stock VW rings to Total Seal, and they were impressed with the quality.  Although I can't be real sure, but I think they also said that there wouldn't be much improvement useing Total Seal rings over the stock rings.

It was a few years ago, maybe 4 or 6.  But it was on this board, not the old Host Board.
