If you've never used it, you will be surprised by how well it evens the idle out.Looks like 2 links to the same video. Good video, nice engine shots. Sounds like it smooths out and idles nice.Oops, didnt mean to double dip on the link (I cleaned it out for you. ORCoaster)In terms of starting, I'll try that. I'll see if I can work on my to do list items soon then provide an update. I wasnt sure about the idle. With no tach or previous tdi experience, I was just going by sound when I adjusted it.

I've also had them where cleaning the vanes and getting them moving didn't mean it would run when back together. That's when I try a helper pump and see if I can get the RPMs up high enough to get them moving. Sometimes that doesn't do it either. But yeah, opening it up and finding even some of the vanes sticky or gummed up, that probably was one of the problems.

Not sure what starter you are using. If it's the starter that came with the AAZ, it's probably already one of the skinny ones. I wonder if one of the small MK4 TDI starters would fit. Got any pictures of the starter you are using? Must only be an inch or so too long right?

Diesel purge soak to the rescue? I have had vanes stick on me even after I took them out and cleaned them. Quite the pisser as the remaining varnish sort of melts and the vane gets frozen in position again.

What a dilemma, Sorry I can't even think what to do on this one. The stock starter for diesel not working and the smaller gas one is underpowered. What's a guy to do? Push starting is out of the question too as it is an automatic, not a manual.

Ok, video time. Its unlisted for now, so just click or copy the link.Outside temp was about 70 degrees and this was the first time trying to start today. I have never touched the advance knob on the left side of the dash, FYI. My friend said he never really touches it either and his car starts/runs fine.Typically I give the car more pedal after it initially starts and stalls out, so sorry for the repeated starts/stalls. Alternator belt was quite loose, so thats the reason for the squeal. The car has never just started and idled without a little help from the go pedal. Once started I can let off slow and it will idle ok, but does surge sometimes. You can hear this once I hop out of the car and head to the engine bay quick. The car smokes the same amount from the tailpipe no matter warm/cold. This is without fixing injector 4. Will fix asap.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsSW3VjAV84

Thanks for adding me to the group. I have a Grumman Kubvan which originally had a 1.6 NA and automatic transmission (010?)I am swapping out to an AAZ 1.9 which was out of a manual car.The automatic trans bolts up the AAZ fine but the starter won't fit as the turbo return lines on the AAZ get in the way.We tried a starter for a gas engine and it fits but does not have enough power to turn the AAZ fast enough to start.Anyone have any suggestions? I am considering fitting a manual trans but would prefer to keep the Kubbie interior as stock as possible.I've seen some mid to late 80s vanagons had AAZs and automatics??Any guidance for this newbie is appreciated!

Hopefully that is it. I'm going to weld up that hole tonight so going to have it in by this weekend. There was a surprising amount of debris in the transfer pump and the vanes could move, but not well. 3/4 would shift inside the housing while turning but one just wouldn't come out at all, there is a pretty decent layer of varnish so I wonder if it also wasn't working that great and kind of starving it for fuel.
