You say that so casually! Details please! are you using a kennedy adapter, or a vanagon diesel bellhousing? I was going to do something like this, but the deal fell through on the van.

No I'm not using either, I have a Adapter plate like Kennedy that I sell, It's made of Billet Aluminum rather that cast iron, much stronger!!!
If you what more info let me know I can maybe post pictures here

You can't just use any ol' VW diesel alternator to find the "W" terminal... it's got to be off of one that originally had either a factory tachometer or an upshift light. (I think they started putting in the upshift lights in '83 or '84... I know that '84s have the upshift light and therefore the "W" terminal on the alternator.)

The dynamic (ie. twin sensor) oil pressure warning system arrived at the same time as the upshift light, and also takes input from the W terminal. After the upshift light was abandoned (around 88 MY in North America for most cars) the oil pressure warning system continued to rquire W terminal input.
I seem to recall the dynamic oil pressure warning system was introduced in late 82 on Jettas, but was certainly there by '83.

I seem to recall seeing something about a page telling how to build your own circuit to work with like a GTI tach....of course this was before I had a diesel so I didn't care. Can anyone point me in that direction?

http://home.comcast.net/~vwgtd/vwdslfaq.txtissues with this mod: Resistor values may need to be tweaked a little bit. It also doens't work well at high RPMs - acceptable for a street driven / daily driver type turbo diesel with stock governor settings, but probably not for performance modded governor. If we could figure out a better way to modify this circuit to work at high RPMs off the W-terminal, it would be a nice addition.

So if I unplug the w terminal connector i will not have to listen to my oil warning/buzzer anymore? Cool Beans, Also what model VW did the diesel tach come in? I take it they were rare?

Dakota Digital makes their DSL-2 system ($110.95 per their web site
www.dakotadigital.com) that has a sensor that looks at the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. You set the dip switches on the box to tell the system how many teeth on the gear and it gives you "a standard 4 cylinder tachometer signal". Plug and play.
