redrotors: ever since the day you made the switch over to the newer version for this forum, i've had to log in twice before it logs me in. it also doesn't 'remember me' like it used to. sounds like others are having this problem too. any ideas?

Same here. It's very frustrating. Maybe it's his way of censoring us....

WinXP home (SP2) and IE6, no login trouble for me. Don't suppose its some browser security thing? You must have your "cookie" to be remembered, but you all know that. Perhaps you need to delete your current vwdiesel.net cookie and login again to re-write it, seems to me I had to do this once after a software upgrade on another forum, the old cookie was somehow incompatable with the new forum software and the cookie refused to be re-written until I manually deleted it.

WinXP Professional (SP2) and IE6 here...
I do have cookies turned on and the old version of the forum functioned fine and logged me in automatically every time (unless I had deleted the cookie).
I delete cookies at least a few times a week so its not an old cookie.
Any other suggestions?

Same problem here.
I have to log in to get info on updated posts at the main page. Then when I try to post (like this one),or when I check private messages,I have to log in again.
It will not remember me if I come back tommorow.
Same PC,same OS,same browser I used before, nothing has changed except the site upgrade.Other sites still fine.

Bear with me, I'm not very knowledgable about this stuff.
From what I understand, you fellows could be experiencing a problem due to your ISP using dynamic IP addresses. ISP's use this scheme to recycle addresses in order to accomodate a large number of users. The ISP uses whatever address is available to transmit your data, and you may be assigned a new address after a period of inactivity, or sometimes after a predetermined time has elapsed. The problem arises due to the new forum software using the first 3 sets of digits of your IP address as a second means of identifying you after you log in. This prevents other users, who would presumably be using a different IP address, from hijacking your account while you are logged in. With your ISP occasionally changing your IP address, the forum software suspects you of being a hijacker and will log you out as a security precaution. Likewise, when you return to the forum after an absence the forum may not remember you due to your different IP address. The forum software only uses the first 3 sets of digits to reduce the number of "nuisance" logouts to a minimum. Most ISP's limit the address changes to the least significant group of digits, as a potential hijacker is unlikely to be using the same ISP as you. The folks having trouble must be with very large providers that find it necessary span addresses further than the last digits.
Far as I know there is no real fix. This new security feature can be disabled by the administrator, but would leave the board vulnerable. I guess the best thing to do is move out to the sticks and get yourself an ISP that only serves about 10 other people, that way your IP address is static, like mine...

I just use the log in to view your PM's and it avoids the problem. Don't know why, don't even really care, I just know it works for me and so that is what i use.

You only have to login twice if you use the straight "login" button. However if you use the "login to check messages" button it only takes once.
That's what I've found.
