gunning throttle- clutch slips

This is my 92 Eco with governor mod. When I give it a lot of throttle while cruising, I can feel the clutch slip as well as see the tach jump about 300 rpm instantaneously. Same thing from starting from a standstill if I give it too much throttle. This started recently. Does this sound like a worn clutch or oil on the clutch? If I baby it, how many miles will it take before the clutch is totally useless? Trying to do some planning before the inevitable.

I regard that as a safety risk, and would fix it sooner rather than later.

I would check the clutch cable and make sure it is adjusted correctly. If it is the self adjusting style I would reset it as described in the Bentley or on this forum, I forget where I read it.

After checking the adjustment of the cable, check through the TDC hole in the bell housing to see if you can see any oil and around the bottom of the bell housing also. If you end up changing the clutch, I'd replace the rear main seal while in there on principal, anyway. Same goes for the clutch pushrod seal and the input shaft seal maybe, depending what you see around the bell housing.

Indeed, Crazy Andy is right on target except that he forgot the clutch release disc.
And, you probably need a mill on the flywheel to get rid of the blue.

The lock nut on the manual clutch cable backed out so the adjustment disc changed position so there was 1/16" instead of the 1/2" gap called for. Readjusted it and will road test later and see if it improves.

Excellent, good it was something simple. However, I would still remove the bottom flywheel cover plate at the bellhousing and check to see if any significant amount of clutch friction material was lost. Just a precaution, no need to be alarmed.

I will check behind the cover plate when it gets warmer. Clutch is not slipping anymore. Last time I looked at the flywheel when I was checking the TDC timing mark a few weeks ago it was dry.

The no more slipping after clutch adjustment was not totally tru. If I gun it hard, it still slipped.
I have been driving it gingerly so as not to burn it out and and a useless vehicle. Now it's 8 months later and the same clutch is back to 100% normal. I can gun it hard now and it does not slip. I only do that when I need to (like when I'm pissed at people tailgating me lol).
What was the problem when it was slipping? I love it when my Jetta fix itself but would like an explanation. What do you think?

maybe the clutch cable was too tight ... and now the clutch is much worn so it has less layer so giving that extra cable edge the oportunity to the cluch grab the flyweel has it should...

Mighta worn off a bit of glaze from the slipping.
My Audi80 recovered on its own from a bad burning.
