Diesel-friendly transmissions?

I am pretty much a noob when it comes to my VW transmission knowledge. Could someone educate me on the different types of trannies and their compatibility with vw diesel engines? I know about the 020. I am interested in the stronger transmissions though.
Is the 02M the only 6-speed? Is the 02A the basic mk3 transmission? Is the 02J the mk4-5 tranny? What trannies will mate to the early blocks (1.6/1.9 IDI, AHU, 1Z)?

What's the tallest geared transmission? Cuz this 020 4S sucks. 100km/h in 5th at 1300 egt and 6 psi is not fun.

Also, what types will mount into a mk2/3 without changes to the mounts themselves?

The tallest is the CTN code O2A from a A3/B4 TDI. Its got a 3.15 r&p and a .75 5th. You can bolt up any O2A or O2J in a MK2 with stock MK2 mounts. You just need to make sure the O2J (mk4) has 100mm flanges, which any TDI trans will have. If not the flanges just bolt on and are easy to swap. You'll need 100mm axles too ofcourse.
The CTN is the best with MK2 tire sizes IMO.

Awesome, thanks. So with an 02a, could I run a VR6 clutch with a G60 flywheel (or oem AHU/1Z flywheel)?

Yup, you can run a VR6 clutch with the stock G60/1Z/AHU flywheel. I have this setup in my car right now. Watch out for the aftermarket flywheels, they usually come without a TDC mark on them and I've heard about alot of quality issues.

I'm using a CTN O2A in my corrado and it really is the best due to its ratios. Mk4 people even want its final drive. I've also tried the O2J transmissions but the 3.1 R&P is the best combo for a mk1/mk2/Mk3 wheel and tire size.

You can also change the 5th gear easily with ratios from .700 to .622 for nice low cruising RPMS.
Also the ring and pinion is a 3.16 (3.157894737) ratio.

With a bit of custom fab, it will.
There are ready-made mounts to fit an 02A/J in an A1 chassis. Still have to deal with axles, shifter, etc... but that's all been covered thousands of times.

For a drop-in 020 tranny, look for an ACN (or AON, ASF, or ACL, all the same) It has a 3.67 final, and a .75 5th. Tallest 020 there is.
1st: 3.45
2nd: 1.94
3rd: 1.37
4th: 1.03
5th: .75
I have this box in my Wife's car, the drop from 1st to 2nd is a bit long, but 2-3-4 is really nice in town, and it purrs along nicely in 5th on the open road. 1st is too short to build boost (with a big turbo, hehe) and 2nd is too steep to launch from, but I didn't build the car to drag race, and I don't think my Wife is going to do too much street racing.

ive got the ACN in my car, i like the lay out of 1-4 gears, but the jump from 4th to fifth is just massive. the first 3 gears are fine to build boost in my experiences, worked well so far. i build boost just fine in first gear, then really build the boost in 2nd. i hate to chime in and negate most of what you just said, but it works just fine for me. builds boost faster than my 4 speed, thats for sure.
