1.6 TD COMPRESSION RESULTS
« on: June 07, 2008, 04:12:11 am »
I popped the injectors out and did a compression test last night before I pull the engine. It is a stock 86 TD engine w 170k. I was a little surprised. The results are

1-----490psi
2-----440psi
3-----420psi
4-----490psi

The engine was bone cold. I did not that it took a few cranks to get to max pressure. I am not sure how long it should take or how much the pressure should jump. I did notice that the pressure bled down to 300 psi rather quickly. Could be the gauge, or my rings and pistons I guess.

Any thoughts from anyone on these results?

Every compression tester I've seen is supposed to hold the max pressure untill you push a little button.

If I had that high of numbers I would be so happy.....I think 498 was new spec. 71psi is the max difference between cylinders so your barely good. Mine averaged 370psi a year ago when I checked. :(
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

I wish those were for my old GTD.

Being a bit of a bodger, I use this method. Find very steep and quiet hill, stop, turn off ignition, engage a suitable gear, and let off the hand brake. If you have the right gear, the car will stop on each cylinder compression, how long depends on how fast that air leaks through rings, valves, and assorted holes. Seven, one, three and five seconds suggests that a proper compression test would only say bad news.

While road testing the "new" GTD I got eight, eight, six & seven seconds. So I bought it. Best £500 i've spent in a while.

Just for giggles I put a cap full of oil in one of the low cyl and it went from 420 to 540psi. I have a spare set of Turbo rings so I may just toss them in and see what happens. That road test is interesting, I can't wait to try it. Thanks for the info!
