Unfortunately there are several different marks, and then people scribe their own / use gasser flywheels etc etc.
Your first picture looks a bit wonky to me in that I've never ever seen a factory timing mark right next to a flywheel bolt.
The second picture is definitely the factory mark, properly aligned. Both my current diesel flywheels have the diamond shape *and* a line, but the same diamond shape for sure.
My opinion would be: if you can find a mark like the second picture then go for it..... the first one looks aftermarket-ish to me.

if a person un bolted the fly wheel from the flex plate , and moved it one bolt over , would that not change the timing marks?
i can't remeber if the fly wheel and flex plate are indexed to each other .

They are indexed to each other. There are pins that only allow the flywheel to bolt to the pressure plate one way. With that being said, using a different pressure plate could allow the flywheel to bolt on differently. I installed a new p-plate and the I had to scribe a new timing mark.

That first picture is (i'm pretty sure) the dynamic timing mark for a gasser motor. It appears that someone has used a gasser flywheel on a diesel
To the right of that mark (about 1/2 inch) I believe you will find a little round peen mark, that's the static timing mark..

So is there a way to mark the flywheel for TDC before it is mounted to the engine?

The best way would be to have the cylinder head off and the transmission on. Use a dial gauge and find TDC and then punch TDC on the flywheel.

The first pic is from AAZ, at each time that I have make a timing on this engine, I white painted the mark.

so in picture Photo0021
is the TDC mark the punch mark to the right of the white dot?

I'm pretty sure that I used this mark to time my last engine.... It runs fine.
I'll have to take the head off my spare engine and verify the marks. Come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen that diamond looking thing
