My 1.6l me code diesel's starter is getting kinda sllooowww (and with 2000 cold crankin amps i dont think its a battery issue)
And autozone wants damn $100!
Shipping woukd be outrageous i reckon.

pm sent. ;D

told you the batteries were un-necessary..

This reminds me, do they make better starters now than came with these cars originally? I got a new battery and put an extra ground directly to starter bolt and it doesn't really seem like the car spins over that fast. For all I know its an original starter to the car at 200,000 miles.
On my old f250 you can put on newer gear reduction starters and with the same batteries they turn the truck over much faster than stock.

I think someone said the VR6 starter works, it's got a gear reduction. Otherwise yours probably just needs a little rebuild like brushes, bushings and and the commutator cleaned.

the ABA starter is gear reduction too, and designed to work with an 020 trans.. i doubt it has enough balls to turn over a diesel very fast tho..

Diesel MK2 starters (the ones with 3 mounting bolts) are gear reduction and they fit a mk1 just fine.
Did you do a voltage drop test to make sure your cables are all good?

you sure? i thought they were direct drive? i guess ive never really payed attention that much.. just assumed they were the same layout as a mk1 starter..
-
I've taken them apart and they have a 4:1 or 3:1 (I forget) planetary gear reduction.

They will actually start the diesel just fine even in sub zero temps, but they don't live very long when doing so.. :-\
The MK2 starter as Tyler mentioned is the way to go I think...

You got it...

And early Mk2 is direct drive.
I am pretty sure that once they switched to the 3 bolt mounting style for the starter they switched to the gear reduction.

I had the mk2 gear reduction diesel starter on my 1.7 gasser when i had it in my 84. It spun that motor sooo fast..
Now I have it on my 1.6na and it still does the job just fine with over 300k on it.

I wonder how early.. I had a couple '85s and an '86 that had the gear reduction starter.. Not to say that someone else didn't already change them..

the "real" way to go is the MKIV TDI 01M automatic starter...it's gear reduction and 2KW ...and if you add the thick MKIV TDI starter cables (power and ground) you have an unbeatable combination....I ran this setup on my 1.6td caddy and it spun over fast enough to skip the glows!!

any mods needed to bolt it up?
used with stock battery and it spun ok?
-
it bolts right up...no mods and yes a stock battery and cables work fine...another plus is you don't need the small bushing in the trans ...the starter bendix shaft is self supporting

Had 2 of 4 brushes left on my starter.. Hung a gasser starter.. :-( works good (for now) tho

your diesel dont have much compression then, usually a gasser starter struggles to start a diesel..

A healthy gas starter shouldn't have issues starting a diesel if it's not too cold out.

That's probably right, tried one and it only worked if the engine was hot otherwise it needed to crank faster than the gasser starter could do it.

i had the same results..

This little thing is working like a champ.. Hasn't been cold yet tho. But it's.. Workin too well. My motor must be tired lol
Or maybe it's that sweet f250 mod!

that F250 mod would be overcome by ONE GOOD 1000cca battery..
