the "real" way to go is the MKIV TDI 01M automatic starter...it's gear reduction and 2KW ...and if you add the thick MKIV TDI starter cables (power and ground) you have an unbeatable combination....I ran this setup on my 1.6td caddy and it spun over fast enough to skip the glows!!

any mods needed to bolt it up?
used with stock battery and it spun ok?
it bolts right up...no mods and yes a stock battery and cables work fine...another plus is you don't need the small bushing in the trans ...the starter bendix shaft is self supporting
Had 2 of 4 brushes left on my starter.. Hung a gasser starter.. :-( works good (for now) tho

your diesel dont have much compression then, usually a gasser starter struggles to start a diesel..
A healthy gas starter shouldn't have issues starting a diesel if it's not too cold out.

That's probably right, tried one and it only worked if the engine was hot otherwise it needed to crank faster than the gasser starter could do it.
This little thing is working like a champ.. Hasn't been cold yet tho. But it's.. Workin too well. My motor must be tired lol
Or maybe it's that sweet f250 mod!

that F250 mod would be overcome by ONE GOOD 1000cca battery..
