i need a clutch to hold more power for my 84 rabbit. there seems to be plenty of stuff for the 1.8 gas motors of the same year. would they work on the diesel
-
What is this monster that you are needing such a powerful clutch? A stock clutch (210mm) should hold fine on a tweaked TD.
-
1st
do 16v pressure plate,
2nd,
south bend (or o2a conversion)
-
A gasser 210mm clutch should be a cheap upgrade,.. and I believe the 16V pressure plate applies more force.

car is in the idi section if you want to check it out. went for a third gear pull and it spooled up and revs went up car didnt accelerate much. it was rather bad.

i have heard the straps break. does this use the same flywheel? what year of vw does this said clutch i want come on? im new to these things

gearbox vw used in mk3 vrs and tdis, and everything mk4+ stock clutches are known to hold 250-300hp stock. And they last forever (comparatively) unlike our 020s
-
I would suggest an ACT pressure plate and stock disk. If you have the means, an o2a swap would be ideal. It is not a bolt in affair though.

i have a 16v pressure plate, and 210mm clutch.. it hooks up good!
idk why it wouldnt work for you.. the 16v pressure plate is the important part of the equation.. no stiffer clutch pedal, but you can tell the difference when launching..

off what car and what flywheel are you using
-
I run a sachs 16v PP and 210 disc with my 1z in the cabriolet and it has no problem hooking up
The 16v originally came on sciroccos and some jettas/golfs of the 87/88/89 vintage the 210 disc came on rabbits, jettas, golfs everything but the diesel from about 84 on and flywheel you can do from any of the 16v or even 8v mk3 cars just make sure its marked for TDC before installing it as some only have advanced timing marks!

its off a 16v car, duh!
kidding aside tho, its off a 2.0 16v out of a german 92 Jetta GLI.
flywheel, i think its a stock weight gasser flywheel.
and the clutch is rebuilt stock VW/Audi 210mm.

just stock stuff? no crazy disc?
-
and another question the outside diameter of the flywheel is is the same? does the starter and such still work?
and the disc will fit the splines on my o20 trans?

MAKE SURE THE MK3 FLYWHEELS HAVE 2 ALIGNMENT DOWELS IF YOU TRY USING ONE. some only have one alignment dowel, and if your not sure, you can have the TDC mark me about 60* from where its supposed to be. also, the mk3 8v flywheels are HEAVY, the same weight as stock diesel flywheels.. mk1/2 210mm flywheels are all roughly the same weight tho, and are lighter than the stock diesel flywheels.. i consider a gasser flywheel on a diesel to be basically a "light weight flywheel" theres no way i would ever use an actual LIGHTENED FLYWHEEL on a diesel tho.. ask Powered By Spearco about light weight flywheels on a diesel..
well, i think my disk has stock style lining on it, idk what the rebuilder used tho..
stock pressure plate as was factory on a 16v engine from VW. same with the flywheel.
my clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate all have VW/Audi logos on them..
it hooks up awesome, and has never slipped yet for me..
wont even slip when dropping the clutch with 15 psi boost already built up when changing gears. the tires just spin..
all 020 flywheels are the same outside diameter, and all have the same ring gear, and starter spacing/positioning FWIW..

yea but if im using a flywheel off a mk3 wouldnt that be a different diameter? if im going from 200 to 210mm or whatever the sizes are something has to change to hold the bigger disc. so what all works with what?
am i basically looking for a newer flywheel and using the older 16v clutch?
-
Right, you have to get a 210mm flywheel and pressure plate, about any VW, liquid-cooled, gasser with an 020 will have one.
MK3 flywheels had 2 pins while others had 1 pin, to clock the flywheel/pressure plate.
New clutch kits usually include the pressure plate, so you are looking for a used 210mm flywheel and someone to surface it.
The clutch disc, which is also 210mm, is determined by your trany.
A trany for an 8V engine has a smaller main shaft, so the clutch disc needs the smaller center hole.

so a mk3 flywheel from the jy. and a new clutch from the years you posted earlier would work? for the sciracco

well, if you want a stock weight flywheel, yea, go for mk3..
i, personally tho, like the mk2 flywheel..
better yet, what kinda car is it going into?
i wouldnt do a mk2 flywheel unless the engine is going in a small car. i wouldnt use a mk2 flywheel on a mk3 tho..

one little additional thing to look for is trans input shaft size relationship to the clutch disc. Some trans have large input shafts some smaller just make sure the clutch disc you order is the one that fits what you have. 210mm clutch comes in both.

he shouldnt have to worry about anything.. its an 84.. should have the diesel/8v small shaft..
only the 16v, and mk3s got the big input shaft..
its easy if you have a mk3 trans, you just order a full 16v clutch..

yea and your telling me to order a sixteen valve clutch also. i have been told there were flywheels on the canadian diesels that were 210mm

well, heres the thing.. a mk3 diesel clutch setup, and a 16v clutch setup are the SAME THING, except that the 16v kit comes with a tougher pressure plate..
the flywheels on ALL CANADIAN turbo diesels (1.6 & 1.9) were 210mm.. so idk what you are trying to accomplish by using the AAZ clutch setup..

well, ive only ever seen one flywheel with no timing mark, and it was aftermarket.. every other flywheel ive laid hands on, has the TDC mark..
are you sure the AAZ got the small input shaft? i swear they had the bigger main shaft? AAZ clutch kit wont have the heavy duty 16v pressure plate tho..

I have seen a few usually gassers marked with advance mark and no tdc it will boggle the mind when trying to use one on a diesel till you figure it out! I only mentioned it since he was talking about getting a JY flywheel something to be aware of. I'm with ROR though aaz i would think would be big shaft and not fit if op has an 84. Its really not as difficult as this long thread would imply!

amen to that brother..
i didnt know we needed a thread about stock clutch selection..
-
yep still confused. all i know is i have an 84 with a 020 trans. id like a flywheel with the correct tdc marks and a better clutch and now im more confused then when i started

the 16v flywheel sitting in my bedroom, has the proper TDC mark. thats the only mark you need on the flywheel.
you need:
16v pressure plate
8v clutch disk
and any 210mm flywheel that has a TDC mark, and like i say, most of the flywheels ive seen, had a TDC mark. ive only seen one in my life that didnt have TDC. and i will NEVER forget it. once you get a digifant 6* flywheel, ahd fight it for months, you will never forget it.
diesels dont have special timing marks.. all you need is a TDC mark!
-
The last 210mm flywheel I used had the TDC mark in the right place.

which clutch disc would be small spline with the 210 mm.
-
yeah the i didn't understand was what cars came with 210mm flywheels and also the small spline input shaft. i was under the impression that the 210mm flywheel was an aba and 16v thing so u couldn't get one with the smaller splines unless it was something aftermarket, but apparently any older gas 8v would have the right clutch so long as it's not an aba

yea..
the way to remember it, is as follows:
under 100hp, usually 90mm drive flanges, and a smaller (190/200mm) clutch..
over 100hp, usually 100mm drive flanges, and the 210mm clutch..
and another thing.. the flywheel has NOTHING TO DO with the clutch spline diameter..
the clutch is the only part that dictates what trans/input shaft you use..
being that your car is an 84, it will probably have a 200mm clutch, like my 84 had when i pulled it apart..
and another thing.. you CAN USE the mk3 2.0 flywheel and pressure plate, but not CLUTCH, as you mentioned in your last post.
-
or is it more simple, any 8v bigger than a 1.7 has a 210mm fly wheel, and diesels all had 200 unless they're older
-
and aaz had the 210 haha
-
or is it more simple, any 8v bigger than a 1.7 has a 210mm fly wheel, and diesels all had 200 unless they're older
i think most, if not all the 1.7's had 200mm wheels..
Jeremy is a 1.7 guru, so maybe he will know..
i think the "under 100hp rule" is easier to remember..
but there are exceptions to every rule. my 86 golf came stock with 85hp, a 210mm clutch, and 90mm drive flanges..
-
yeah and rabbit gti and 8v scirocco, are 90hp and had 210 flywheels
-
so as i was redoing my timing i figured i would ask this question. my flywheel has all kinds of degree marks with all different kinds of letters also. does it have a gas flywheel. any way to tell exactly what size it is without pulling the trans?
-

diesel flywheels have one timing mark usually, just the TDC mark AFAIK..
gasser or UNIVERSAL flywheels have lots of timing marks. the only important mark is the 0* (TDC) mark..
i kinda remember my TD rabbit having this kind of flywheel also.. it had a brand new 200mm clutch setup in it when i got it. didnt take me long to get that clutch slipping..
as was stated before, just be very careful that you dont get a DIGIFANT flywheel, because they also only have one timing mark, but its 6*, not 0*..

this has about 3 different zeros in it an a,b and a d also. this is engraved into the top. but the one zero thats engraved also has a zero cast into the flywheel at the spot also. very confusing
-
FWIW, TDC is almost always right at the edge of a bolt hole..
post up a pic, we will find your TDC mark..

if its not right next to a flywheel bolt, then its not TDC..

whats that supposed to mean?
ive been there, done that.. know what works and what doesnt..
you CAN get away with a stock clutch if you aint running slicks..

pwned in the internet word for owned. as in you rocked it, you have posted like every other post here for weeks now. Was just giving you props.
