if i pull my dipstick @ idle, its got a small geyser effect! not flying out, but rolling out. drips  per second. are my rings that bad considerin im averagin 43 a gallon? or is it possible theres another issue?

i think i would look at a plugged breather hose or something like that..

X2, and also check your vacuum system for leaks..   The vac pump exhausts into the crankcase..  IF it's sucking extra air in, it's pumping extra air into the crankcase...

yup, check the vac pump too. shouldnt have much of an exhaust..

guys thanks for the insight! im fairly certain i have a vaccum leak, as i can head the brake booster "bleed" down  after i turn the engine off, and i defnitely have a hard pedal unless the car us runnin.. hmm ill have to check around! thanks im glad its not "the other thing" haha.  and its really a problem because you cant even get near the dipstick without gettin terribly nasty, and i cannot park in the driveway not even for a second. i think its the brake booster. is the gasser from an 88 the same? any gasser?

the mesh in the valve cover? what is the mesh? when i take the 8 nuts off and lift  the cover, i just see a cam with caps and rockers..  where's the mesh?

what kinda car do you have? a mk2? if you have a mk2 car, then the booster off the gasser should work..

thanks flossy! it's an mkII (as evidenced by my sweet aaz fuelly in my sig!) yeah i'ma shoot out and get that booster from the 88 gasser today.. but i really need to figure out where the vac leak is before i spend any more money i don't have..

the brake booster is about the only thing that uses vacuum.. the heater switch might too, but i doubt it. usually the diesels got cable operated heaters..

yeah but i might have a boogered up line runnin the the booster.

and when i flip my vent lever i hear vacuum so i think it's a candidate but .. i don't think it's got a big enough leak to geyser my dipstick

wow, you got a vacuum operated heater then.. thats kinda weird..

and usually if you have a bad hose to the booster, it usually doesnt feel like its working very much..

A/C cars use vacuum HVAC controls. Block the nipple off at the vacuum pump and see if that solves your problems

ight i  went and replaced my booster.. i think it was a  leaky vacuum line connection, but  anyway..

it didnt help. but what does help is to pull the tube off the valve cover. soon as youdo, oil in  the dipstick tube goes down. either those intake tubes  are plugged, or its still blowby/vacuum huffin  into the crank.

i just vented the PCV hose to atmosphere and it solved the prob :/

those intake tubes  are plugged,

I'm thinking that's you next place to look..  If it were blowby it should make no difference whether or not it's hooked up..

Intake tubes on the intake manifold right; Where the PVC hose connects?

Drill out the little holes in the bottom of the intake Manifold?  Or drop the intake and drill somewhere else?  What's a guy to do?  And how do you keep the shavings out of the system.  Shop vac after drilling is done?

Not sure what your suggesting here.

ORCoaster you crack me up. yes his post is a big vague, but when i looked down in the tubes i did see something that looked like it could come out of there. and now that i'm vented to atmosphere i
1.) can hear the happenings of the engine a bit louder now, and its a tad annoying and
2.) a fine white smoke comes from under the hood at stoplights ... kinda fun but getting old fast. plus it's stinky

so i might be interested in this drilling thing, assuming he responds to your call for clarity

WDK, does your intake have 2 nipple ports where the hose from the valve cover connects ? Hose is 'supposed' to branch into a T - then plugs onto those intake nipples.

Maybe those nipple ports are clogged.

With those low comp numbers - more than likely its blow-by causing the dipstick fiasco. A good operating PCV system should handle most of it.

burren (haha) yeeeah i know.. thats what i suspected, but  i had hopes  on the "vacuum leak causes  the vacuum pump to over delievr and charge the crankcase" idea. it did T, and  i think  its possible that the little holes are cloggy, but i  think given all the white smoke from the PCV hole its likely excessive blowby. but, im rollin 44 mpg with no missin so..  ima just..  stay with the trick smokin  hood for now

my engine is fairly healthy and it has breather smoke at idle at night. not visible in the day time unless you just raced a honda.. lol..

and being that your car is a super early mk2, wouldnt it have a mk1 style air box? i swear the later/better style air box didnt come till like 87 or something?

Are you meant to be able to remove your dip stick with the engine running? Is your oil level too high, and reaching the tube?
Valve cover venting/mesh could be blocked making things worse though.
Haveing said the first thing,  my Quantum dipstick has not got a rubber seal any more and I don't have an issue 8)

some dip stick tubes stick down past the full level, and almost touch the bottom of the pan.. so it would have to have pumped out a good couple quarts before the oil level is under the dip stick tube.

any of you guys ever notice how a 1.5D has no dipstick tube? yea, well, those felt seals between the dipstick and block really dont stop much oil. it took me DAYS to figure out that my dip stick was leaking oil every time i got on the boost..

haha No Mark, what happens is .. the dipstick tube slowly rises up like a fountain.. and eventually spills over. if i remove the tube coming off the valve cover, it drops back down. with the tube off of the valve cover, white smoke puffs out the hole. if i cover the hole with my hand, my dipstick tube will then launch oil in my face (really)

i don't know what intake i have .. some guy told me it was different than it should be maybe? he was an old fart, but might have known what he was talkin about.

it's .. a big black rectangular box with a filter inside, and it attaches to the intake manifold, which has the two tubes i capped off running into it, then the head. here i'ma go make a few pictures hang on

first picture:

those tubes with bolts in them, those are for the breather off the top of the valve cover.. hook up the breather line from the valve cover to those hoses. either find the right hose, or just get a T and some hose and make your own..

if it just blows oil out the dip stick tube even with the breather hooked up to the intake, then you have clogged ports in the intake manifold.. there have already been a few different people telling you to clean out the crud from those ports and hook it up like it should be..

You have to make do with what you have; put a hole through your hood, stick on a stack and a pietzo electric igniter.

If it burns, it's rings, and if it doesnt, then its valve stem seals [maybe] ;D

Never did get Fatmobile to respond to drilling into the intake manifold.  Anyone care to speculate on what he was trying to say.  I know there are four small holes in the bottom of the box, Was he thinking to enlarge them or was he even thinking?

My 81 is starting to build oil in the box and smokes at idle.  Pinch the hose from the VC and watch that dipstick jump right up into your hand.  Very amusing to small children in the neighborhood.  You can kind of figure out when to command it out based on time and idle.

Pinching the breather will pressurize the block.

In the OP's picture, if you pull the hoses with bolts stuck in the end of 'em and look down in there you'll see how it necks way down. Looks like one of vdub's engineers wasn't wearing his thinkin' cap right then.

The port goes into a much larger one that splits into each runner. I just looked at mine (off of vehicle) and it looks like you could drill it out bigger thus eliminating some oil leaks due to lower block pressure.

Also those restrictors could be plugged with something.

A properly vented block WILL NOT push oil out the dipstick tube without very major blowby and then every seal on it would most likely leak pretty bad.

Drill out the restrictors is basically the same thing others are saying.
The post just before this explains it well.

sorry guys i've also hacked my new AT&T inspire 4g to run on gingerbread so i'm worrying those forum members over there, and my 05 mustang GT has a parasitic draw so i'm worryin those guys in that forum, and i just got a Garrett AT Pro metal detector so i'm worryin that forum called treasurenet.com about it ..

and it's gonna be exam week next week

and the stupid race is in town this weekend so i gotta get ready for that

i think the restrictors just need to be drilled out (hahaha sorry i couldn't help it)

i think that one rabbitman is right; the motor shouldn't push the dipstick out even if it was all slopped out (which mine very well could be given my PROTHE compression gauge results)

but i have decided to keep it vented to atmosphere, cause it .. kinda adds to the .. beauty of the car. like when i stop, i also smoke and it makes the hippies and the liberals whine even more.
oh, i guess i should clarify why they are whinin to begin with:

(http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/6427/dscn4951k.jpg) (http://img27.imageshack.us/i/dscn4951k.jpg/)
so the smoke tends to help my cause haha
i've got a whole bunch more in my window now but it's dark and it's late i'm not runnin down to snap one off.
hey i got a blinkin glowplug light.. if i drain the water and nothing comes out or the light dont stop blinkin should i snip the wires?

Sounds like you did it correctly; The light comes on when water completes the circuit. If it's off now then you should be good. My light wasn't blinking, but the moment I touched my rear water separator it fell apart, so I just ripped it out. There was some pretty nasty stuff in there though.

hahaha no, no i have not gotten my block pressure situation figured out yet. if it's blowby (it must be cause i have good smokage when at a stoplight now that PCV is vented to atmosphere) then what am i gonna do re-ring it right now?
if the intake is just jammed up i'll deal with that ... soon hopefully.
i think it's gonna be excessive blowby tho, judging by the way it freightrains at a stoplight..

i've just got too many irons in the fire right now to really deal with the thing.

soon tho. i'll post up

mine doesnt have much blow by and it still smokes at stop lights.. its a VW diesel thing.. im sure mine would puke oil too if the bottom end couldnt breathe..

only reason you never notice the smoke, is because 99.9 percent of VW diesels have properly vented breathers (vented to the intake so you never see the smoke.

why not take a compression test and see if you need rings? rather than just speculate.. because if your vents are clogged in your intake manifold, and your breather is basically a plug at that point, it will push oil out of the dipstick EVEN ON A BRAND NEW ENGINE..

make the breather work like its supposed to, and hook it up right.. then you wont have to worry about it..

you think the intake manifold could consume all this ??

yup, i do think it could consume all that. and i would also suspect you have a vacuum leak somewhere, or your engine has a bazillion miles on it..

Here is how to fix your problem;

1. Remove intake manifold
2. Clean the PCV ports in the intake manifold, if needed enlarge holes
3. Install intake manifold
4. Install new Y-hose from valve cover to intake manifold ports
5. Find and repair ALL vacuum leaks

DONE!!

Your welcome.

Well guys I wobbled the holes out on my intake and the oil dipstick doesn't fountain anymore!
On a side note, my god the air conditioner brackets are bull ***! Uhhh how miserable. It's right now thi

i dont mean to be an ass, and rub it in..

BUT!

WE TOLD YA SO!!

and yes, the a/c brackets are a pain.. and remember, you gotta tighten the a/c belt first, then tighten the alt..

i HATE a/c and power steering, i dont run them.. my cars all have one belt..

I couldn't figure a way to run just one belt. I don't even have a/c the only thing left is the compressor @ this point. But it's needed to run the alt. I tried replacin it with the alt but I couldn't go it.
How do you have one belt on an a/c car?

you havent figured it out because you havent taken your a/c compressor off. and you havent found Toywagen yet..

http://www.toywagen.com/ (http://www.toywagen.com/)

to use stock VW pullies, you need a non a/c crank pulley and water pump pulley.. then the stock alternator pulley lines up perfectly.

only reason i know that, is because ive compared a/c pulleys, and non a/c pullies.. the a/c pulleys have more offset (1 belt width)

No dude my bolts were stripped that hold the compressor to the bracket so I had to pull it all down; the alt, compressor both brackets everything. (turns out that bracket holds coolant too! Big surprise there)
But I didn't have access to the non a/c pullies yeah I'm dyin to get this damn compressor off.
Next time it dicks off again I'll find these pullies you speak of.

toywagen makes a pulley where you can use all the pullies you already have on your engine..

and no, the bracket doesnt have any coolant running thru it. but the bolts that hold that bracket on, also hold the water pump to the block.. THAT has coolant in it, not the bracket..

ROR, are u using that toywagen pulley on your diesel? It is designed for the gas engines. Will it have the correct offset for diesels, especially mine? What about pulley diameter? Is it the same?

8v, and diesel should have the same offset pulley. it should be the bracket that is different..

R U saying in addition to the Toywagen pulley, I also need the adjusting bracket from a gasser to convert my Ecodiesel to AC less? With a new longer belt of course.

no, im saying that you need a mk2, non-a/c mount for a diesel.. the gasser mount will have the alt in the WRONG spot..

I swapped a non-AC alt pulley on to a non-AC alt (the mounting ears are different), dropped my compressor off as scrap metal and then got the VW non-AC brackets and bolts.  That way I can always get parts that fit without having to fab anything down the road.  No issues with alignment, no issues with belts.

no, there not.. there is a complete a/c alternator on my 86 golf.

the brackets are different, not the alternator and pulley..

the mounting ears on the non-a/c alt were no different than the big 90a a/c alt i swapped on my car..

Sorry Kevin but the mounting points are different on the AC vs non AC alternators. The top pivot one is the same but the lower one is different. Actually the top one might be different as well I'm not 100% sure now. I have held both in my hands and you can clearly see they are different. I thought I have a picture but I don't.

The ear position on a factory AC equipped MKII alternator is the same as a gasser. It is different than a non AC diesel MKII.

Trust me, they're different.  I had to buy a new alt I otherwise didn't need to get the brackets to work.  I definitely tried to use the one I had first only to find it didn't fit the bracket at all.

The diesel non-AC alt has the mirror image of the gasser / diesel AC mounting ears - they are exactly the same size, shape, etc just exactly opposite in where they sit on the alternator.  If I made my own bracket and was happy to have a non-standard belt size I could have used my AC alt, but I wanted to be able to walk in to a parts store in the middle of nowhere and get parts by number rather than messing around trying to fit bodged together components.  Besides it was starting to get noisy.

i got lucky then.. because i have an 86 GTI (golf conversion) that is factory non a/c, non p/s car.. it had a tiny little 65 amp alternator..

i didnt change ANYTHING besides the wiring, because the 65a had a plug with 3 wires, and the 90a had 2 separate wire.

anyways, pulled the 90a off a GTI w a/c & p/s.. still had the pulley on it from the a/c belt setup. bolted it right on the non a/c

..................................

......................

crap, i forgot that diesels have different positions for the alternator if its got a/c or not.. i forgot that they place them up REAL HIGH like on a gasser. and down low for non a/c..

sorry guys, my bad, i was wrong..

I guess we can forgive you.  Depends on how much corner time you are willing to do.  Or would you rather write something like 500 times.  Remember when they used to do that stuff?
