Oh, chase those threads first.

I like to wait till the last possible moment to do the final 1/2 turn so that if you have to pull the head for any reason you dont have to buy new bolts.

thank you, reading this:

On diesel engines, reinstall the combustion pre-chamber inserts, if
they were removed while cleaning the cylinder head.

what part is that?

Three different cylinder head gaskets are available for use on diesel
engines, identified by a number of notches or holes in the gasket near
the part number.

omg i didn't know that, checked my old gasket and got 3 holes, the new one got 1, how ***ed am i?

That's bad news.  The different gaskets are different compression ratios.  The more holes, the thicker the gasket.  If you run a gasket too thin your pistons can contact the valves even during normal operations, not to mention your compression will be through the roof (not good on a turbo diesel).

Holy crap don't even tighten the head down!!! You need to use the correct headgasket, three hole.

What year is your TD? If it's 86+, buy a 1.9TD 3 hole headgasket (not a 1.9TDI), it's the same thickness as a 3 hole 1.6 HG. It's a metal HG, much better than the fiber gasket that is stock on 1.6 diesels.

Thanks! i'm not sure what year the engine is, someone told me that the engine is not a original TD since my diesel pump does not have the UFO at the top, but i'm not so sure about that. But how do i time these engines? I can not see any timing mark on the camshaft, i even took of the camshaft wheel (yes i marked the timing belt :) ) and look for a mark and discovered that the wheel can fit around the camshaft any where, i'm used to petrol engine and they can only fit one place. But i'll order 1.9TD 3 hole gasket tomorrow! Thank you everyone!

There is no timing mark on the camshaft so to say.

There is a slot in the end of it which should be parallel to the surface of the cylinder head where the valve cover gasket goes. Cam lobes #1 and #2 (Sprocket end) should be pointing at 10 and 2, and the last two lobes (Flywheel end) should be pointing at 8 and 4. The injection pump sprocket should be lined up with the mark on the injection pump bracket, or the metal backing plate if the later A2 design, and flywheel should be at TDC as indicated by the TDC mark.

On diesel engines, reinstall the combustion pre-chamber inserts, if
they were removed while cleaning the cylinder head.

What is that, where is it located, and what does it look like?

even if a 3 notch was on before, i would still measure piston protrusion because maybe you need to use a 2 notch or even a 1 notch to get it to run properly (they will all run with a 3 notch, but cold starting will suffer)

Look at this pics, the pre-chamber is located to the left of the valves (round thing with a semi-circular hole in it). You most likely didn't remove them, they need to be punched out from the injector hole.

thank you very much for good information, i did not remove them :) I ordered the 1.9TD gasket and it didn't fit... realizing that my engine is older than 86.  I'm starting to think maybe its not a original turbo engine at all? or? I'm going to take a picture and write the numbers on my pump so maybe someone here can identify it and confirm. Thank you guys again for this help!

the 1.9 gasket only works if you have an hydraulic head.  1986.5 and newer.

My head is hydraulic but the bottom was wrong...?! The head is not mechanical...
