Turbo on my NA...
« on: July 18, 2007, 04:36:50 pm »
Hi,
I'm getting ready to turbo my 1.6 na.  I'm getting the manifolds, and am going to the junkyard to find a turbo.  For the downpipe off the turbo (for lack of a better term), what should I use?  I thought I read something about some downpipe being able to clear the shift linkage, or something.  I also have a bunch of 3" stainless pipe; would it work to just use that as an exhaust for it?  How much would the turbo quiet it down?

Also, I have seen the threads on the vortex and such, with "16vjohn" turboing his rabbit.

As I added to that post on 'vortex..

If you are keeping the n/a pump, I would suggest using a K14 or a T2.

If you are getting an actual TD pump, then go T3 or K24.

Make sure that there is no real play in the shaft of the turbo. Be prepared to rebuild it.

You can use the stock downpipe off the manifold. If you have a little more cash, you can send it out to get extrude honed. You can use the stock flange "toilet bowl" downpipe, but I would suggest you take that to a exhaust fabber, and have them make one out of larger diameter piping (eg: 2.25 to 3.00 id) and attach it to the flange (make sure they enlargen the flange opening to match the piping you select).

If you have more cash, then get a Passenger Performance downpipe.

Besides that, just install a glasspack inline to keep the boominess at bay, and the exhaust will not be loud. Yes the turbo does cut down quite a bit of the noise.

You will also need the oil filter mount from a TD and the oil feed line as well. The TD mount has an extra fitting to send oil to the turbo.

You will have to either get a TD oil pan or weld a boss onto the stock oil pan (near the top lip of the pan) for the turbo's oil drain line.

There are some things you should get:

EGT guage <-- highly advisable - helps monitor your EGT levels.
too high EGT is major bad for a n/a motor.

Intercooler <-- highly adviseable - helps lower EGT's

Proper air/oil cooler set up.

Yup and keep in mind that the turbo block and config are a bit different from the NA setup:

- oil squirters in the block to spray oil on the pistons
- oil cooler mounted between the oil filter and filter flange
- different injector nozzles and breaking pressure

So if you're using the normal block you may want to pay particular attention to boost and temperatures.

Intercooling should be a given when using forced induction. Especially if you're deciding to turbo a plain jane 1.6D!

EGT gauge = pyrometer...another necessity. Don't go boostin' with out it...

I answered your question on 'vortex. Read there. Ebay is your best bet. Do search for EGT gauge.

pyrometer and intercooler aren't a necessity on a na turned td, unless hes tuning, then its just as much a necessity as it is on a td.

bevboyy, sorry, I missed that.  Thanks.

I'd like to put a pyrometer on it, just to be on the safe side.

That would be prudent.

Intercoolers are not that expensive, and since the N/A lacks the oil cooling jets, anything that helps cool the intake charge will be beneficial.
