ceramic coat the VNT housing in the -17?

can this be done on the inside and outside of the housing or would all the vanes have to be taken out? i'll be getting a used one... might be in my best interest to take it apart and clean the soot out of it, might as well ceramic coat it at the same time too right?

I have wanted to do this also and have asked on here many times getting the same answer. It was felt it would not be helpful but no real facts to back it up.
Yet i still want to do it to mine along with the manifold. I will also have a SS heat shield that wraps around the exhaust mani.

I've done it on mine. Remove the bolts on the hot side and carefully slide the cold side out. Then remove the vanes & clean up everything. I had mine done by SwainTech.

What coating did you have put on it? And what do you think about it? How much do they charge. What parts did you send? I thought about send all of the hot side and having them coat the hot side of the center section.

It's been a year or so. I had them apply the White Lightning on the outside of the header/housing. It is thicker than JetHot (and the like). Because it isn't shiny it won't win beauty contests, but it was applied very nicely. IIRC it was $125 for the manifold, with shipping.

That is some cool stuff right there... If I had the funds I would send in about everything to have coated. I can only imagine how efficient and long lasting a IDI would be with everything coated.

Nope, just the hot side housing/manifold. Coating the vanes would probably through the balance off. They're meant to run at those temps. We're just trying to keep the heat (and therefore, velocity) of the exhaust working in our favor by coating the manifold prior to the downpipe.

I just called swaintech about coating my turbine housing and exhaust manifold. They said they would do the outside only. They said that there is no way to coat the inside and have it stick reliably. I was told that turbo damage would result. If you only do the outside, the metal still gets just as hot, and expands just as much. If it expands from glowing cherry red, the coating will crack. It just holds the heat in the metal. I want to keep the heat from getting in the metal, and get it out of the exhaust system as fast as possible for better spool.
Who has done the inside of thier manifold or turbine?

keep heat in, for better efficiency and spool.
i think the best you can do is try to insulate the turbine housing with some of that fibreglass stuff. coating the inside on a brand new turbo might work, but if it did ever flake off while the turbo was at full song, then be prepared for some problems...

sorry but a vnt17 spool so damn quick, you can make pressure at idle with this turbo even on smaller engine's than a 1.6td.
talking about efficieny, i bet you will never see any better feul mileage because its just such a little difrence.
no doubt to anyone who do coat, but i think even guys who did coated all the parts didnt saw any feul mileage benefits.
