My local Checker store about a mile away takes up to 5 gal at a time of used motor oil -- couldn't be more convenient.  I guess not everyone has that option though.  Burning used motor oil in an engine is way more toxic than diesel.  And with biodiesel, it is possible to use a diesel engine to pollute far less than average.

I've heard of people taking along a quart or two of new motor oil on long road trips in case they are getting low on fuel and can't find a diesel pump.  A mixture of motor oil and gasoline works fine in a diesel engine, especially an older one.  I'm not sure what weight of oil works best or what the ratio should be, but I'd like to know, because I'd certainly do that in a pinch if I had to.
