how much used motor oil can I get away with?
« on: January 13, 2005, 07:58:53 pm »
I was curious I know other people are doing it, I am filtering some used motor oil to .5 micron and was wondering how much I could add to my diesel safely?

I've thought about doing this in the past after reading about it in Farm Show Magazine www.farmshow.com but never tried it, and don't think I would now.
There's a local garage here with one of those waste oil furnaces, and it smells 'funny' driving by when it's running...doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the process...

That said, the feedback from the FSM articles I read seemed to indicate ~10% max worked in heavy equipment. approach or exceed 15% and injectors started to coke.
SO I would presume 5% or less would be ok, from a purely technical standpoint...
FYI.

it wasn't used oil, but as an experiment once, i ran a 50/50 mixture of 120 weight engine oil and 100 octane avgas in a n/a diesel.  It was a fair amount thicker than diesel, but ran just fine!
off topic, sorry.

I am sorry, I did not mean to offend anyone with my question.

I did not buy a diesel to save the world.

Now that you mention it, I believe I did see that!
What issue was it in, I'll look it up again 8)

I wrote in to Grain News once a few yrs ago & defended a VW diesel from misinformation, but never contributed to FS. Have since cancelled my GN subscription, their tech stuff went downhill.
Still luv FS though!!

I dont take offense to it...  Heck a rocket launch to the moon gives off a crap load of stuff into our atmosphere, so a little oil won't hurt. I'm just saying that the people driving behind u might not like u.. (unless ur exhaust pipes were up high like on a truck :D

honestly with 5qts added to 9 gallons you can't tell the difference, heck this diesel doesn't even smoke yet when im on it, so im not worried about that and most of my driving is done off peak hrs of driving- 4:30am-5:30 and then 2:30-3:30pm.

Not many people get "stuck" behind me it's more like I am stuck behind them....

FYI I live NE of Harrisburg PA where there is a landfill every 5 miles off the highway and farm feilds inbetween spraying that nasty nasty solid waste stuff on the fields, you know the stuff you can die from if you walk through the field if it was sprayed withing xxhrs before hand/causes illnesses.

mmmm alittle extra stench in the air is going to go unnoticed.

If I "dispose" of it properly you know where it goes?

some guys multi fuel furnace for some purpose or an ashpalt plant...
give it away free for some people to use or mix alittle in after filtering and use it.

Would you like to come ove sometime and cook over my Waste papaer barrel when I light it on fire and burn all of my paper waste for the week, since where I live it is legal?

If anyone would care to know alot of PSD guys have run up to 50/50 mix of used filtered WMO in their rigs, they just watch their oil for excessive ash deposits and check on their filters...

if your worried about deposits in the cylinder just setup a small jet to spray water in, the idea is just enough to steam clean everything and provide alittle bit of a boost... change the nozzle and you can get a bigger boost in power and change what you are spraying in, oh the possibilities on it.

fair enough, so I will say rocket launches in general.  I'm not a firm believer that I can make a difference in the pollution problem :(  I think it is just something we have to live with until we can all convert to another source of energy.

I probably will.  I hear there is a biodiesel place somewhere in durham region that I will have to go see.  Since I have to change a few lines on my car I'll wait until summer (no warm garage to work in :()

I have run 10% used motor oil and had no problems.  I try to use it when I am going on a long trip so it gets burned when the engine is good and hot and under a constant load.  No visible extra smoke but I did get a higher soot reading at the last oil analysis.  I have heard that the used oil is hard on pumps and injectors due to the soot in the oil.  I have pretty much discontinued the practice.  Regarding pollution, since most of the used oil ends up mixed with bunker fuel, burnt in asphalt plants, etc. I don't have any issue using it in minimal quantities as fuel.  RT

Dodge recommended up to a 10% addition of clean used motor oil added to the fuel.  I use to use a half gallon of used oil with a 14 gallon fill up for about 3 years.  I was told by my Bosche injection pump/injectors rebuilder that the used oil caused more varnish/wear on the injectors.  I discontinued to use the oil in the fuel now for about 3 years.  I was also told from an uncomfirmed source that the extra soot created by the used oil could cause the piston rings to soot up more than normal and would cause them to not expand contract properly.  I know once that I did add about one and half gallons of used oil to a full fill up of about 16 gallons of fuel.

I did notice that my mileage went up a bit while using the oil, but I tried not to use it during the cold months of the year (between December and March when my temps would reach -20F).  Now with my most recent  engine rebuild, using gapless rings, I choose not to use any additional lubes in the fuel, except for fuel conditioners or purge.

Used Motor Oil in the Fuel Tank
« Reply #14 on: February 06, 2005, 12:14:31 pm »
I ran my 81 Rabbit Diesel LS on a 10% mixture of used motor oil and diesel fuel during the summer months with no problems and no smelly exhaust beyond the normal diesel exhaust smell.  The opacity test of the exhaust for emissions compliance must be under 20% and my car was under 8%.  This is a great way to get double use out of your motor oil and a simple way to dispose of it safely.
